That’s right, we’ll be getting to see the origin story of the film’s sassiest ladies: Rizzo, Frenchy, Jan, and Marty. Getty Images We don’t know too much about the upcoming series just yet, but we do know it’s going to be called Rise of the Pink Ladies. The Grease prequel will feature the early days of the Pink Ladies, where Rizzo, Frenchy, Jan and Marty were only just becoming friends. Variety wrote: ‘Before rock ‘n’ roll ruled and before the T-Birds were the coolest guys in school, four fed-up, outcast girls dare to have fun on their own terms and spark a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.’ The Rise of the Pink Ladies TV show will consist of 10 episodes with an hour-long running time. It’s been described by producers as a ‘musical comedy’, which means there will be a whole bunch of catchy songs we’ll no doubt be adding to our karaoke playlists. New original music will be created for the series, written and produced by Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter, who has worked on albums with Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga. Jamal Sims, who has worked on 13 The Musical and RuPaul’s Drag Race, will choreograph the musical numbers. The cast for Rise of the Pink Ladies has also now been finalised. It will star Marisa Davila as Jane, Cheyenne Isabel Wells as Olivia, Ari Notartomaso as Cynthia, Tricia Fukuhara as Nancy and Shanel Bailey as Hazel. Madison Thompson of Ozark fame will also be in the new series, as well as Johnathan Nieves, Jason Schmidt, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper and Jackie Hoffman as assistant principal McGee. Unfortunately, there’s been no confirmation of the air date yet, so it’s looking like we’ve got a long wait ahead of us. Annabel Oakes, who is the producer, writer, and director of Atypical on Netflix, is the executive producer alongside Marty Bowen and Erik Feig. Marty and Erik are also working on the prequel film Summer Lovin. The Grease prequel film Summer Lovin In 2019, it was announced that Paramount Pictures was developing a new film about Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, this time, focusing on how the unlikely young couple met (in other words, the prequel will be the fleshed out, film version of the classic flick’s iconic song, ‘Summer Nights’). Rex Features More details were then shared in a report from Deadline, including the fact that Brett Haley, the man behind I’ll See You in My Dreams, Hearts Beat Loud and All The Right Places, has been brought on board to direct. Titled Summer Lovin (yes, without the G), the upcoming screenplay will be written by John August of Big Fish and Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark fame, who also co-wrote the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So you see, our expectations are very high for the Grease prequel. Rex Features Much to our disappointment, no details regarding casting have been revealed as of yet – but we are also super excited to see who will be filling the very big shoes of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who played the high school lovers, as well as other iconic characters like Frenchie, Rizzo and Kenickie. Rex Features As reported by the BBC, the soundtrack to Grease – originally a 1971 musical which was released as a movie in 1978 – remains one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. So you can only imagine how many of us will be eagerly awaiting the release of Summer Lovin. Although some do feel that Paramount should have based the Grease prequel on the widely popular fan theory that the whole film was a figment of imagination from a dying Sandy. Perhaps we can get both?
