YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty Aloe Vera is the skincare ingredient taking over TikTok By Sophie Hines - June 30, 2022 Aloe vera is by no means a new discovery in the skincare world – in fact, The thick, cooling gel inside the plant’s leaves has been used as a safe, multi-tasking, natural remedy for over 4,000 years. Right now, however, it’s certainly having a moment, with over two billion views on Tiktok for the hashtag #aloevera. Google trends agrees, with searches for ‘aloe vera for face’ up by 45% and ‘aloe vera for sunburn’ up by a whopping 350% in the past 30 days alone. So is it worth the hype? Dr Miriam Adebibe, cosmetic skin doctor, and co-founder of London skin clinic Victor & Garth says it is ‘an amazing natural product’. ‘It has so much good in it including Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin E’ she explains. ‘I’m constantly telling patients to use these religiously, as they are the most important antioxidants for the skin. Plus, not only does aloe vera contain anti-inflammatories, it also contains several chemicals that are antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, so it’s a multi-tasker for dermatological conditions where inflammation is a key component, such as acne, eczema and dermatitis.’ So how should you use aloe vera? ‘If you have an injury or lesion, it’s good for ad hoc use but it’s also great when used within a repair product such as a night time moisturiser, serum or mask that remains on your skin to work overnight’ says Dr Adebibe.
