I’m impressed – and you will be too. It’s easy to be taken in by big names and beautiful bottles – but looks can be deceiving. Plainer packaging may be hiding a real steal. We’ve tested ten products, all £10 and under, to discover which budget buys can rival any luxe competitor… 1. Elf Wow Brow Gel, £6, superdrug.com A wax-gel formula that picks up the finest hairs as well as being infused with fibres to help fake volume on even sparse brows. It’s also super buildable. Available in five shades, from taupe to black. 2. Sainsbury’s Boutique Velvet Blusher in Pink Rose, £3, sainsburys.co.uk A long-term love of YOU beauty director Edwina, who proclaimed this one of the best blushes she’s used. The cream texture gives a subtle flush to cheeks that lasts – and there’s not a sparkle in sight. 3. Skin Republic Collagen Infusion Face Mask, £4.99, superdrug.com This sheet mask is one of the most saturated we’ve tried, soaking skin with antioxidant vitamin E (for hydration) and collagen (for firmness), leaving your face soft and plumped. It’s biodegradable, too – an all-round winner. 4. Bliss Micro Magic Microdermabrasion Renewing Scrub, £9.99, boots.com This is packed full of fine pumice that gently buffs away dead skin cells and pore build-up. With soothing aloe and peppermint, it smooths skin texture, leaving it clean (not tight), and feels incredibly satisfying. Though don’t let that tempt you to use it more than twice a week. 5. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution, £5.20, deciem.com Salicylic acid chemically exfoliates but is also an effective pore decongestant. It’s oil soluble so can penetrate to reduce breakouts and refine texture. Combined with a squalane base – an emollient that hydrates – it’s a good introduction to acids for sensitive complexions and great value, too. 6. Autograph Lasting Colour Luxe Eyeshadow Quad in Mocha Mix, £10, marksandspencer.com The finely milled pigments mean this blends nicely. And the subtle shimmer in some of the shades adds a glisten to your eyelids that looks far more expensive than you’d expect from a humble M&S palette. 7. Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, £4.49, boots.com Disguising dark circles, redness and blemishes with ease, this has high staying power – plus it layers well for when you really need to hide your sins. It’s vegan, too, and now comes in 20 shades. 8. Naturally Radiant Hot Cloth Cleanser, £6.99, superdrug.com A sumptuous creamy texture that glides on, with nourishing cocoa butter, plus kiwi and mulberry extracts to brighten. It cleanses without stripping while the muslin cloth gently exfoliates. 9. Lacura Hair Mask With Coconut and Fig, £4.99, Aldi stores Almost £30 cheaper than the popular Coco & Eve Hair Masque and with a similarly delicious fig scent. NYX Epic Ink Liner, £9, boots.com Its fine paintbrush tip can create delicate flicks or stronger strokes, while a concentrated but thin formula won’t flake and lets it lie smoothly under eyeshadow. It survived a workout, too.
