YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Beauty A skincare expert share their do s and don t s when visiting the gym By Sophie Hines - June 14, 2022 Many of us enjoy the benefits of a good gym workout, but we don’t want it to come with a sid order of bad skin, thanks very much. In fact, the recent TikTok trend for ‘gym lips’ (i.e. lips covered in liner and gloss for a ‘natural’ gym look) has demonstrated that many people want to go glam for their workouts, and highlighted that wearing makeup to an exercise session is increasingly normalised. Getty However, there are definitely a few things you should keep in mind if you want to wear makeup to the gym, and other skincare considerations to keep in mind during your workout, as Kimberley Hulme, Head of Clinic at Face the Future, explains… Morning workout? Forget cleansing Kimberley comments: ‘If your favourite time to head to the gym is in the morning then there’s no need to cleanse your skin after waking up. However, this is only the case if you fully cleansed your skin as part of your nighttime skincare routine. ‘There’s no particular harm in a morning cleanse before a workout, but it is worth noting that any benefits to the skin will be limited as the product will most likely sweat off. Instead, opt for a simple splash of tepid water to refresh your skin before you head out to the gym.’ Opt for mineral-based makeup Kimberley recommends: ‘We would always advise removing any makeup prior to a workout, as sweat will not only interfere with your makeup, but can also result in clogged pores and breakouts. However, if you’re self-conscious about going barefaced in the gym, then mineral-based products are a great option as it won’t clog pores. For a fresh base, we recommend the Oxygenetix Oxygenating Breathable Foundation as it’s water-resistant and heals the complexion with its gentle formula.’ Getty Banish gym bacteria In the midst of weight and cardio workouts it’s no surprise that gyms can become host to a range of bacteria… Kimberley says: ‘If you’ve been working out in the gym and touching gym equipment, ensure that you avoid touching your face. ‘We would recommend cleansing your face once you’ve showered after your workout to remove any grime or bacteria but if you can’t get refreshed straight away then there are quick-fix sterile sprays that neutralise any dirt once applied to the skin, protect against infection and don’t cause irritation.’ Getty Shower as soon as possible Kimberly adds: ‘Once you’ve completed your workout it’s a good idea to get out of your gymwear as soon as possible to help prevent any breakouts caused by sweaty fabric left on the skin. ‘If you suffer from, or are prone to, back or chest acne this tip is especially important, so be sure to shower as soon as possible too to remove pollution and sweat that’s been collected during exercise.’ RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR You could get paid to test Liberty’ s Beauty Advent Calendar People are obsessed with this Revlon hair drying tool A new drop of Boots Star Gifts has landed for Christmas 2022 Popular in Beauty People are seriously impressed with Primark’ s £8 skinny curling tongs December 16, 2019 Boots is giving away free lipsticks to celebrate the launch of January 23, 2020 This long-lasting eyebrow product is getting rave reviews and is just June 21, 2021 These Liz Earle gift sets are on sale just in time March 5, 2020 WIN A Kiehl’ s skincare heroes bundle worth £104 July 24, 2020 Cult skincare brand Sunday Riley is branching out into hair products April 24, 2020 Superdrug is holding a huge BOGOF sale on all cosmetics for May 28, 2020 Your salon could charge you extra for overgrown roots and bad June 25, 2020 Facial steamers Why searches for this beauty gadget were up 400 July 10, 2020 Lush subscription boxes have arrived and they contain exclusive new products August 3, 2020 Popular CategoriesFood2704Life2496Fashion2240Beauty1738Celebrity1261Interiors684 Sign up for YOUMail Thanks for subscribing Please check your email to confirm (If you don't see the email, check the spam box) Fashion Beauty Celebrity Life Food Privacy & Cookies T&C Copyright 2022 - YOU Magazine.
