YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life Horoscopes A ‘ strawberry supermoon’ is coming this month By Kanika Banwait - June 8, 2022 We don’t want to sound too cliché, but seriously, where has the time gone and how is it June already? We’re already halfway through the year and just as we’ve started enjoying summer, the summer solstice is fast approaching. The summer solstice, aka the longest day of the year, is on 21 June, which means we’ll be treated to a delightful 16 hours and 43 minutes of daylight. According to Paganism, this day is also known as midsummer’s eve and holds a special power. It’s a time of growth, life and change, with particular recognition of the seasons now shifting towards winter. Difficult to comprehend when we haven’t even had the best of summer yet, right? Getty Images But before the summer solstice, the UK will see a supermoon appear in the sky – a strawberry supermoon. And while this sounds like a Beatles or Prince song, it’s actually a pretty cool astrological event taking place just next week. What is the strawberry supermoon It’s basically another name for June’s full moon, and is also known as the rose moon or hot moon. Although a full moon occurs every 29.5 days, a supermoon is more rare and occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth at the same time that the moon is full. Getty Images But why is it called strawberry supermoon? Many full moon names come from Native Americans, and this month’s moon is named after strawberry-picking season. It’s also based on the array of colourful flowers that bloom in summer. When can you see it The supermoon will be visible in the UK on 14 June 2022 and will reach its peak at 12:52pm. The strawberry supermoon is one of the three supermoons we will see in the UK this year, so if you’re going to miss it, you can always catch another one later!
