Earlier this year, a study by Rightmove revealed that the most desirable place to live in the UK was Cornwall. At the time, we were still stuck in lockdown and when restrictions lifted, thousands of us flocked to the picturesque county. Now, Rightmove have conducted new research to reveal the happiest place to live in Britain. The property website conducted its ‘happy at home’ index for the 10th year running, to find that Hexham in Northumberland has been deemed the happiest place to live in Britain. Getty Images To find this out, more than 21,000 people across the UK were asked to explain how they feel about where they live. The participants had to rate different aspects about their hometowns, such as friendliness, community spirit, schools, restaurants, shops, sports facilities, nature and green spaces. They also reported on the opportunities available to develop skills and whether people feel they can be themselves. It’s not the first time market town Hexham has been crowned ‘the happiest place to live in Britain’; in 2019 that it also won the title, suggesting this town in the North East really does have something special about it. Getty Images Derek Kennedy, the Mayor of Hexham, said: ‘Hexham is thrilled to be awarded the happiest place to live in Great Britain. We are a small town with great history, Hexham Abbey and other historical buildings, and our market place is 800 years old. There is a wonderful community spirit, people are very supportive of one another.’ Considering the town is full of green spaces and has an active sporting community, it’s clear to see why it topped the list.
