YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Fashion The Chic List ‘ It’ s my season of reinvention’ By You Magazine - October 3, 2021 Fashion columnist and influencer Joanne Hegarty talks all things style. In the same way that scent stirs up powerful memories and feelings, an autumnal wardrobe, with its cosy look and multi-textured feel, is highly evocative for me. Much more so than a summer one, I would argue. Every piece I buy gets a whole new life imagined – how I’ll wear it, where I ’ll wear it – as soon as I hand over my cash. Women attach much more feeling to their clothes and we are lucky that we get to reinvent ourselves stylewise across our lives. Men can wear the same things for a decade and not really notice until holes start to appear. Or somehow the magic shrinking fairies have sneaked in and, out of pure malice, made things smaller so they won’t do up any more! In this column, I wanted to share what I’ve personally added to my wardrobe for the new season. And what train of thought and projected feelings were put on these poor unsuspecting pieces idly hanging around in a shop or online. It was my birthday in September. I spent my childhood often going back to school on the big day but this is one thing that’s got better with age. This year I asked my family for a pair of new season chunky boots from The Row as a gift. (I always send a website link to my husband to take the pressure off because he says I’m impossible to buy for – and he’s right!) I imagine myself wearing these with knitted dresses or under jeans on city walks with my son. Or to a gossip-filled lunch with a friend. I like to contrast feminine silhouettes with something chunky–it makes me feel more rebellious than I am in real life. A statement striped knit has also been added to my wool collection. I have to be strict with myself when it comes to these as I am a sucker for woolly jumpers – my favourites are roll-necks–as the feel of a soft knit against your skin can get you through an anxious day. Also nothing beats a good knit on one of those slightly chilly but bright autumn mornings – I associate them with comfort foods like pasta, hot chocolate and Sunday roasts. I like to mix the shapes of what I’m wearing, too – high-waisted, wide-leg trousers in cosy camel with fitted knits or blue or white shirts and statement necklaces. I usually wear something simple like this on a Friday when my brain is only operating on half charge after the busy week. (Check out Jil Sander and Monarc Jewellery for chunky cuffs and lovely necklaces.) If, like me, you’re a fan of navy or black, a cream slouchy bag always brightens things up.
