The show, which stars Doctor Foster‘s Suranne Jones as the lead, became an instant hit with viewers and now, less than a week later, the BBC has confirmed a second season is happening. BBC Set in the 19th century, the Victorian drama stars Suranne as real-life British society figure Anne Lister, a rebellious Yorkshire landowner who lived a uniquely adventurous life, travelling the world and climbing mountains. She was the ‘first modern lesbian’ and the show is based on her real-life journals. Despite having just kicked off the first season, the BBC has already confirmed that they will be working on a second season after receiving a whopping 5.6 million viewers with its opening episode. BBC Fans were not only blown away by Suranne’s performance as the sexy, self-assured Anne, but many took to Twitter to explain the importance of the show with one viewer, tweeting: ‘I’m just so thankful for #GentlemanJack — I can’t even put into words how validating it feels to know that such a historic woman was so sure of herself and her sexuality and seeing it played out in such an inspiring story on prime time BBC is so special’ Meanwhile another tweeted: ‘I swear whatever role Suranne Jones plays she just draws you in and captivates you ? unreal talent #GentlemanJack’ I’m just so thankful for #GentlemanJack — I can’t even put into words how validating it feels to know that such a historic woman was so sure of herself and her sexuality and seeing it played out in such an inspiring story on prime time BBC is so special - emily ? A massive thank you to the BBC and HBO and to everyone at Lookout Point.’ Similarly, Suranne said: ‘I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey. We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out. A huge thank you to the BBC, HBO and Lookout Point for giving us our second series. ‘It’s such amazing and positive news.
