YOU Magazine Fashion Beauty Celebrity Health Life Relationships Horoscopes Food Interiors Travel Home Life This is what we’ re all buying at John Lewis this January and it speaks volumes By You Magazine - January 18, 2021 Our current shopping habits are always a reflection of the general mood of the public, and with the usual January blues on top of a global pandemic and nationwide lockdown, the fact that John Lewis has seen five times more searches for wellness-related products on its website this month is no great surprise. People are attempting to counteract the short, cold winter days and gloomy public mood by embracing self care, as indicated by the fact that searches for items such as weighted blankets, SAD lamps and candles are all up by a significant amount compared to last year. Weighted blankets are proven to help you fall asleep faster, for longer and more deeply and were originally invented to help people with anxiety sleep better. Their ability to soothe the entire body, aid relaxation and provide comfort means searches have increased by 170 per cent (compared to last year). Building on their success, John Lewis has recently introduced weighted eye masks too. John Lewis Specialist Synthetic Weighted Blanket – 4.5kg, £80, John Lewis Silk pillowcases are also on the up (+30 per cent); they’re great for maintaining your hair and skin’s moisture levels, so this increase is no surprise given our renewed fervour for skincare and haircare. We all know how tough it is to leap (or even drag) ourselves out of bed in the mornings during winter, which is why SAD lamps – an alarm clock that wakes you up with gradually increasing soft light – always spike around this time of year. But this January, SAD lamp sales are up 30 per cent on this time last year, proving we all need that little bit of extra help to get us out of bed in the morning. John Lewis Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 Wake up to Daylight SAD Light, £129, John Lewis Meanwhile, another self care trend is on the rise – bathscaping. Think tablescaping for your bath, it involves surrounding your bath with items such as candles (which are up by 104 per cent at the retailer this month), a bath tray (made from a natural material such as wood is preferable), leafy plants, a book and a cosy bath mat – don’t forget to snap a quick pic for the ‘gram before getting in. John Lewis Neom Organics London Tranquility Standard Scented Candle, £32, John Lewis But any bath expert knows the bathing ritual doesn’t stop there – sales of cosy bathrobes have also increased by 107 per cent (maybe in an attempt to create an at-home spa-like experience). John Lewis Hi Pile Fleece Robe, £39, John Lewis January is a great time for a de-clutter and early spring clean; influenced by the ‘cleaning and tidying brigade’ (Marie Kondo, Mrs Hinch, The Home Edit et al.) sales of storage solutions are through the roof: sales of storage units are up by 162 per cent and magazine rack sales have increased by 105 per cent compared to this time last year. Self care extends far beyond bathing and bedtime. 2020’s lockdown trend for nostalgic crafts shows no sign of abating just yet, especially after being bolstered by their presence in Netflix’s hugely popular recent release Bridgerton – sales of embroidery kits are up by an impressive 1527 per cent; cross stitch kits by +261 per cent and craft kit sales in general are up by 67 per cent at the department store.
