Disney+'s Big Shot Is a Refreshing Sports Drama That Elevates Its Premise - Ripene Skip to content Disney ’ s Big Shot Is a Refreshing Sports Drama That Elevates Its Premise September 22, 2022 by Ripene Big Shot is a Disney+ sports comedy-drama starring John Stamos as Marvyn Korn, a college basketball coach who gets fired and gets a job coaching at an all-girls private high school in San Diego. This series, with a second season releasing in October 2022, seems to hit similar beats to most sports dramas but differentiates itself by focusing on female athletes. John Stamos, who made a name for himself on General Hospital and Full House, brings Korn to life as the gruff and headstrong coach of the Westbrook Sirens. While he is the central character on the series, he is accompanied by a stellar cast, the majority of which are women. This includes Yvette Nicole Brown, who portrayed Shirley Bennett on the NBC sitcom Community, as Principal Sherilyn Thomas, the energetic and non-nonsense principal. Big Shot forms part of Disney’s catalog of sports dramas, which includes The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, who have their own hardcore coach for Season 2, but differentiates itself through its choice of characters. RELATED: Ted Lasso Ending After Season 3 Is The Perfect Storytelling Decision Upon meeting Korn for the first time, audiences will find that he is blunt, arrogant and rubs people the wrong way, which is the opposite of Apple TV+’s respectful and good-natured Ted on Ted Lasso. Korn finds himself in this situation because of his behavior and, at first, isn’t interested in redeeming himself. Over time, he learns from his mistakes with the help of others. For instance, assistant coach Holly Barrett (Jessalyn Gilsig), Principal Thomas and Korn’s daughter, Emma (Sophia Mitri Schloss), play an integral role in calling him out when he is acting in a misogynistic or sexist manner. His team of athletes, particularly the player Destiny (Tiana Le), also reprimands him on occasion, such as when he fat-shamed her in front of the entire team. With this, he slowly reveals his true nature as a kind and compassionate person who developed this macho persona for his brand. This portrayal of his character deviates from standard tropes and clichés around male coaches as it puts Korn’s vulnerabilities and flaws front and center. However, this female cast isn’t just a tool used to shape Korn into a better person, they are a group of diverse and likable characters who have their own desires and motivations. RELATED: All American Is The CW’s Hidden Gem As Coach McCarthy (Camryn Manheim), the head coach of one of their rival teams, the Carlsbad Cobras, said, when she started coaching women’s basketball it wasn’t even considered a sport. This is the reality for many women’s sports, including basketball to this day, with it also being an issue that Big Shot tackles. The series is part of a recent rise in sports dramas that focus on female athletes, such as Prime Video’s A League of Their Own, which touches on the difficulties surrounding queer female sports players. There is also Alison Brie’s GLOW about professional female wrestlers in the ’80s fighting for recognition, which was canceled after its third season. By featuring an all-girls team, the issues they face are female-centric, which opens the door for more diverse storytelling. For the Westbrook Sirens, the majority of their school does not take their sport seriously, which means contending with antagonistic teachers and cuts in their practice times. Their daily lives are also central to the plot as they experience same-sex crushes, divorced parents and school bullies. Through this, Big Shot introduces new elements to the genre and assists in crushing stereotypes around women’s sports, allowing it to rise above its premise. Big Shot Season 1 is currently streaming on Disney+.
