The film has been remastered in 4K High Dynamic Range, meaning higher quality sound and visuals. The filmmaker recently revealed his children were able to see the Avatar re-release and compare it to the original. He said, “They got to see it in 3-D, at good light level and projection levels, for the first time. And they were kind of like, ‘Oh. All right. Now I get it.’ Which, hopefully, will be the general audience reaction.” The visual quality of the film, and the cinematic experience it lent itself to, was a major part of why Cameron believes Avatar continues to resonate with audiences. In a recent interview, he explained that, on top of the universality of its themes and story, it was the execution of the film that drew people in. “In the first few minutes [of the film], people just gave up trying to figure out how it was done. We mixed so many techniques that it took us years to develop, and they just surrendered to a sense of immersion in a world and in a fantasy,” he said.
