I don’t know how to speak to 20 people ... let alone a crowd like this.” Answer: Woodstock Max Yasgur rented out his farm for the first Woodstock festival In 1969, the Woodstock music festival needed a home and Max B. Yasgur owned a 600-acre dairy farm. While many places denied the music festival, and many of Max's neighbors were against it, Max decided to open his farm in classic hippie style, although he was paid a nice $10,000. It was later revealed that Max was a conservative who was pro-Vietnam War, but one who believed in bringing people together ... as much as he believed in the income he hoped to receive.Article continues below advertisementSource: Getty Images On the third day of Woodstock, Max spoke out to the crowd just before Joe Cocker's set: "I'm a farmer. I don't know how to speak to 20 people at one time, let alone a crowd like this. But I think you people have proven something to the world ... half million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music, and I – God bless you for it!" These words were featured in Michael Wadleigh's 1970 documentary, Woodstock. While he was ostracized from the town afterward, the festival goers, musicians, and critics all appreciated Max for opening up his farm to the festival. When he passed away just a couple of years later, Max received a full-page obituary in Rolling Stone.
