Gorgeous sci-fi indie Sable will now release next year Breathing space. News by Emma Kent Contributor Updated on 28 May 2019 12 comments If you've been eagerly anticipating the release of Sable since our first glimpse of it at last year's E3, sadly, you're going to have to wait a little while longer, as the game's release date has been moved back from 2019 to 2020. According to a press release from developer Shedworks, the scheduled 2019 release date was "an extremely rough estimate" and more time is required to allow the team to "fully realise the game we want to make". "When we started developing Sable in 2017, it was just Daniel and myself working in the shed," art designer Greg Kythreotis explained. "We had no support beyond my parents letting us use their shed, nor any idea where this project would lead us. All we knew was Sable was the kind of experience we dreamt for years of making. We started sharing the game very early on and the incredible reception we got meant that we very quickly got the backing of Raw Fury, and eventually Microsoft. "It was always going to be tight getting the game out in 2019 so now we've made the decision to take more time with the game and aim for release in 2020." Sable tells the story of an adolescent girl's coming-of-age ceremony, which requires her to explore her world to find a mask that reflects her identity. Earlier this year, I paid Shedworks duo Greg Kythreotis and Daniel Fineberg a visit (to the literal shed where Sable is being made) to discuss the game's Moebius-inspired aesthetic and unusual storytelling style. It sounds incredibly promising, and if it takes a little while longer to make this indie the GOAT, that seems like a fair deal to me. Keep an eye out next year when it releases on PC and consoles.
