XCOM: Chimera Squad is a standalone XCOM 2 follow-up due this month A bit extra extra-terrestrial. News by Tom Phillips Deputy Editor Updated on 14 Apr 2020 44 comments XCOM 2 is getting a standalone follow-up, Chimera Squad, which is due to launch via Steam on 24th April. You can pre-order it now for £8.49/$10, a 50 per cent discount which will be valid until 1st May. After that, it's £17/$20. This new story is set five years after XCOM 2 wrapped up, with a fresh team in a new city - a place supposed to be "a model of peace in a post-invasion world". Humans and aliens are working together, and there's a guy who sounds a lot like Mordin Solus from Mass Effect. Here's a story overview: Watch on YouTube A separate gameplay trailer shows combat now features a breach phase where you must assign each of your team an entry point. Turns then play out via an alternating order of agent versus enemy - kind of like a tabletop game's initiative - so you must keep track of who's up next and craft their actions accordingly. Agents who have been defeated must be stabilised before they bleed out - resulting in a mission failure and the need to replay from scratch. Finally, there's a strategy layer which tracks your progress over a shifting map of the city, which must be protected from falling into chaos. Here's a look at how it plays: Watch on YouTube Become a Eurogamer subscriber and get your first month for £1 Get your first month for £1 (normally £3.99) when you buy a Standard Eurogamer subscription.
