The long-rumored smartwatch is here to challenge all the best smartwatches on the market by delivering a dedicated accessory for Pixel phone users. As you might expect, the Pixel Watch leverages Google's suite of services, offering practically every program from Google Maps and Google Pay to Google Assistant and YouTube Music. But that's only half this smartwatch's story - fitness tracking is entirely backed by Fitbit, meaning users will get both basic activity data as well as access to Fitbit Premium's holistic health features. It's still too soon to tell how the Pixel Watch will stack up against Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, the Fitbit Sense 2 and even the Apple Watch Series 8. We also can't say if it lives up to the years of anticipation for Google's in-house smartwatch. In the meantime, here's everything you'll want to know about the Google Pixel Watch, from release date and price to colors, key features and more. Google Pixel Watch price The Pixel Watch price will start at $349 (£339 / AU$549) for a GPS + Bluetooth-only configuration. The LTE-compatible version of the Pixel Watch costs $399 (£379 / AU$649). Since the watch only come in one size, these are the two prices you'll have to consider. This color selection offers some versatility. Google Pixel Watch design (Image credit: Google Via YouTube) The Google Pixel Watch is a rather clean and minimalist smartwatch, somewhat in keeping with the design of other Pixel devices. It comes in just one size, 41mm, and features a rounded design. It sports a digital crown that looks quite similar to the Apple Watch's digital crown, but it doesn't sit as flush to the curved chassis. The crown button has some tactile grooves, perhaps offering some satisfying feedback while navigating the smartwatch. Additionally, the Pixel Watch has one navigation button that sits above the digital crown on the right side. Meanwhile the speaker and microphone cutouts are on the left side. Google is launching the Pixel Watch alongside a range of interchangeable straps. There are seven total band types in a multitude of colors, with all being exclusively compatible to the Pixel Watch. Google Fit had been an underwhelming health app, especially when compared to what's possible with the best Fitbit devices. Fitbit Premium features, as well as workout tracking, active zone minutes and other health-tracking tools, will arrive on the Pixel Watch. Fitbit will also power sleep tracking on the Google Pixel Watch, meaning if you wear the watch overnight, you'll get an overview of your rest quality. Again, Fitbit Premium will offer access to more advanced sleep metrics. Google Pixel Watch compatibility The Google Pixel Watch is only compatible with Android phones. Unlike Fitbit smartwatches and some other Wear OS 3 watches, the Pixel Watch won't work with iPhone or iOS devices. Google Pixel Watch battery life The Google Pixel Watch battery life is rated for 24 hours of battery life. That's perhaps a bit less than we were hoping to see, especially with Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch getting battery upgrades this year. But what will make the software different or, should we say, better? Popular Wear OS features on third-party smartwatches from TicWatch and others include continuous heart-rate monitoring via Google Fit, contactless payments with Google Pay and hands-free Google Assistant access, plus a Google Play smartwatch store. But there aren't smartwatches that have all of the Google services users might use on a daily basis. Google Maps, Google Pay, Google Calendar, Google Assistant, YouTube Music, Gmail and Google Home are all on-board the Google Pixel Watch. Google Photos will help power custom watch faces, too. Better yet, you can control a Pixel smartphone's camera remotely from the Pixel Watch. Otherwise, the Google Pixel Watch features familiar tile-based navigation, plus support for third-party apps with the Google Play store. Google Pixel Watch vs Apple Watch The Google Pixel Watch could potentially beat the Apple Watch (opens in new tab) at its own game, but it's going to take a serious commitment from Google and some killer features. The two smartwatches are reportedly set to share the same Taiwanese manufacturer. Google Pixel Watch outlook As mentioned, there had been a lot of anticipation for the Google Pixel Watch. Not only had it been rumored for several years, but now it has tough competition to live up to. We can be hopeful it'll deliver, but there's no way to know until we get it on our wrist.
