Guide by Chris Tapsell Reviews Editor Updated on 21 Sep 2020 Starfield is an upcoming game from Bethesda Game Studios and sees the developer exploring a new aspect of the science-fiction genre by heading out into the cosmos. Bethesda's sci-fi game was announced back at E3 2018 to much excitement, and some surprise, along with a very early teaser of The Elder Scrolls 6, and although details are excruciatingly thin on the ground for now, there are still one or two drips and drops of info for us to feed on. With that in mind, here's everything we know about Starfield so far, including our expectations for the release date. Everything else we know Starfield release date expectations when do we think Starfield will launch There's no official day yet - or even a broader window - for Starfield's release date, so if you're looking for that you're going to have to wait a little longer. If we had to take an educated guess, we'd throw our hats on the late half of 2021 at the earliest, but even then, considering how long this game has been in development already, it might be even longer. We do, however, know that Starfield is still in development, because it was mentioned in the press release for Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda on Monday 21st September. This purchase could also lead to the development of an Xbox Series X version of Starfield. Starfield trailers so far and what can we learn from them There's just the one Starfield trailer so far, the announcement one. It's short but sweet! Watch on YouTube There are a couple of fairly simple things we can glean from the trailer, at least. The first of those would be the setting and tone, of course - which is really what trailers are like this are for. Look closely at the bottom-left corner here. We know Starfield's obviously a sci-fi game, but there's also the type of sci-fi that we can get a bit of an idea of from the trailer. Right at the beginning, we can see a bit of writing in the bottom left of the screen, presumably reflecting onto the windshield of our own ship (that would mean this trailer is from a sort of POV perspective). It's only half a word, but it looks to say "conste" - the first half of constellation, maybe? It's also next to what looks like some kind of logo. The planet in the trailer is a watery one, but it doesn't seem immediately identifiable as Earth, so there's little to learn there, and the space station or satellite-like object the camera pans down to could be anything. But then at the end there's one big moment: a kind of warp into something, which the planet and space structure are all folded into. Could this be a kind of interstellar travel, or a black hole, or something else a little less deliberate and known? Sadly, that's just about all we can pick out of it for now! What is Starfield Everything else we know right now On top of what we can pick out from that very brief teaser above - i.e., that it's a sci-fi game with a soemwhat grounded perspective and it has a cool wormhole thingy - and the fact that it's definitely a single-player game, there's very little else to go on. Thankfully, our interview with Todd Howard from 2018 did at least give us something to go on, in terms of an idea of how Starfield will actually play and work. For one, we asked Howard if it would be a Bethesda Game Studios game in the traditional sense - as in, in the same sort of mould as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are - to which Howard replied: "I don't want to say yes or no to that because I don't know what that means to you or whoever's going to read that. It's different, but if you sit down and play it you would recognise it as something we made if that makes sense? It has our DNA in it. It has things that we like." Howard also mentioned that "it has a lot of new systems we've been thinking about for a while that fit that kind of game really well," too. One suggestion for that could be spaceships or flight of some kind - that certainly fits with our reading of the early part of that first trailer, where the perspective seems to be from inside a cockpit - but obviously with Starfield being developed on "next-generation hardware" there are all kinds of possibilities there. So, what exactly is Starfield? We know it's sci-fi, single-player (at least mostly), set in a somewhat grounded-looking version of the space, it's being built on next-gen hardware, it has Bethesda "DNA" in it in terms of gameplay but also "new systems" that the team have been looking forward to using for a while, too. Better than nothing, at least! Hopefully we'll here more solid details about Starfield soon.
