As reported by Comic Book , the sequel - which is reportedly codenamed "Emerald Hill" - will go into production in mid-March 2021, and plans to wrap up by 10th May, 2021. It's unknown if James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Sonic voice-actor Ben Schwartz are scheduled to return for the sequel, too, and the source website Comic Book linked to - Creative BC Film Commission - no longer lists the information, so make of that what you will. As Emma summarised when the sequel was announced, when the first film eventually came out after a delay to work on the (much-improved) redesign, it actually did pretty well: generating £76.6m on its first weekend, making it the best ever opening weekend for a video game adaptation. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio producer Daisuke Sato recently hinted that he'd "like to get involved" with a Sonic the Hedgehog game "once at least" in his career. In an interview celebrating 60 years of SEGA, Sato was asked what SEGA IP he would most like to get his hands on. It's not an easy question given the breadth of SEGA's back catalogue, but Sato went straight to the company's tentpole franchise and mascot - Sonic.
