That date was announced this morning alongside the first official photos from inside the area, which includes Mario Kart and Bowser's Castle-themed rides. Manage cookie settings The original plan was for Super Nintendo World to open alongside the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan's Olympic minister recently said that the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games must be held in 2021 "at any cost". But only last week, Pokémon Go was forced to scrap an open-air event due to be held in Kyoto at the last minute. Japanese newspaper Mainichi blamed the cancellation on a new coronavirus surge in the country, which saw Tokyo hit a "single-day high of 500-plus cases". Today, Japanese media were given a tour of the area - here's footage from Bloomberg, which also confirms the next Nintendo area is in construction next door, this time themed around Donkey Kong.
