New Dead By Daylight Update Reveals First Openly Queer Character 28 April 2022 by Oisin Kuhnke Update [12:09]: We have issued a correction to this article’s headline to clarify that the character is not new to the game, but that the update has revealed new information about them. Original article: Behaviour Interactive has revealed that Dead by Daylight will be receiving its first openly queer character. The next chapter in Dead by Daylight, Tome 11, will be coming to the game soon, called Devotion. This latest update to the game is set to explore the background of survivor David King, and the memories of the killers The Twins. For David Specifically, his story will explore his experiences as a gay man and the difficulties that came with it. This update launches today (April 28), and promises a new twist to the story with The Observer leaving his tower.ADVERT ADVERT “Throughout Devotion, fans will discover that part of his personal struggles revolve around accepting his own identity and sexuality,” said Behaviour Interactive in a press release. “David’s memories will take players to a pub, where a conversation about romantic relationships leads him to speak more about his personal life, including a past boyfriend.“ working with gaymerx For this particular update, Behaviour Interactive worked with GaymerX, a consulting organisation to help studios get LGBTQIA+ inclusion right. “Representation of diversity in entertainment matters, so it was important for us to take time and to surround ourselves with experts in order to do things properly,” explained Dead by Daylight creative director Dave Richard. “We’re very humbled that Dead by Daylight has developed into a space where players from various communities around the world feel free to be themselves.“ Katie Kaitchuck, executive director of GaymerX, also said that working with Behaviour was a “gratifying and inspiring experience,” due to its commitment to bringing a queer narrative to life.ADVERT ADVERT Tara Brannigan, director of player experiences for Dead by Daylight, acknowledged how its players have been calling for better representation. “Video games are for everybody, and everyone should get to see themselves as the hero of their favourite game, regardless of their culture, community, gender or orientation,” said Brannigan. It’s great to see Dead by Daylight feature a LGBTQIA+ character in a game so popular with the community. And hopefully it’s the start of many! Maybe in that dating sim?
