This week, and every week during the three sports seasons, members of the public may vote for a top girls athlete and a top boys athlete. We will not accept votes through email or through social media. Voting started Monday, Oct. 3, and continues through 11:59 pm Thursday. The two winners will be announced in a story published at burlingtonfreepress.com on Friday. Yes. More about each candidate: Livie Clough, Bellows Falls field hockey: The freshman goalie made 11 saves in an overtime win over Otter Valley and corralled six saves as the Terriers bested Burr and Burton 3-0. Sophia Guarriello, Spaulding soccer: Guarriello opened the scoring in a 3-0 win over Randolph, and then handed out a pair of assists as the Crimson Tide beat Thetford 5-0 to push their unbeaten streak to six games. Ginger Long, U-32 cross-country running: The sophomore finished 11th in the Varsity B race at the prestigious Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York. She ran a 16:02.04 for the 4K course, helping U-32 finish third in the team standings. Ava Moore, Colchester soccer: The scoring standout tallied a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over South Burlington and struck twice in a 4-1 decision over Burlington. Scarlet Stimson, Essex cross-country running: Stimson finished third out of 220 runners at Rhode Island’s Ponaganset Covered Bridge Classic, home of this year’s New England championship meet. Stimson ran a time of 19:21.9 for the 5k. Boys Athlete of the Week nominees More about each candidate: Henry Bacon, Colchester soccer: The senior’s one-goal, one-assist performance included the OT winner as Colchester rallied past St. Johnsbury. Bacon also had a pair of assists in a 3-2 victory over Burlington. Joseph Barwood, Hartford golf: Barwood shot a 75 at Neshobe Golf Club for medalist honors at the Division II qualifier, guiding Hartford to the team victory and advancement to states. Cooper Guerriere, Champlain Valley golf: The freshman captured medalist honors at the Division I qualifier at Ralph Myhre Golf Course, leading CVU to the top team finish and booking their spot at states. Guerriere carded a 75 for a four-stroke victory. Mathias Mazanti, Rice football: In a 60-41 home win over Mount Abraham in Week 6, Mazanti racked up 321 rushing yards and a six-pack of touchdowns on 24 carries. Andrew Thornton-Sherman, St. Johnsbury cross-country running: The sophomore raced to 31st out of nearly 200 runners in the Eastern division, the premier race at the prestigious Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York.
