Following last week’s meeting that drew national attention when it was crashed by dozens of pickleball advocates, the Chapel Hill Town Council takes center stage again this week — this time, with an agenda that includes a discussion of various plans for the long-term future of Franklin Street. Even beyond that, though, it’s a busy week for local government — including a look at capital improvement for Chatham County Schools, and a discussion of ‘low-performing’ schools in the Orange County district. Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties. Orange County The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets Monday, October 10, at 7 pm in Town Hall Annex, with a light agenda that includes a discussion of charging-station infrastructure for electric vehicles. Get the full agenda at this link. The Orange County Board of Education also meets Monday in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough, with a closed session from 6-7 pm and an open session immediately afterwards. Board members will get an update on school improvement plans – particularly for Gravelly Hill Middle School, which was designated by the state this year as a “low-performing” school. In addition, the board will receive the results of a survey on teacher working conditions; and they’ll discuss efforts to improve school culture & climate and shift to an equity-based approach to budgeting. Council members will discuss a plan to allocate 6 million dollars in COVID relief funds and hold a work session on the status of two town cemeteries. Click here for a link to the full agenda. And the Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, October 12, at 7 pm in Town Hall. Tops on the agenda: council members will examine various options for the future of Franklin Street downtown, as Chapel Hill considers taking over maintenance of the road from the NC Department of Transportation. Staff will present five options, ranging from minor bike-lane improvements to a full-scale reimagining of Franklin Street itself. In addition, council members will receive an update on the implementation of the city’s climate action plan; and they’ll hear a concept plan for an 11-story apartment and retail building at 157 E. Rosemary Street. Click here for the full agenda. Chatham and Durham Counties The Pittsboro town board meets Monday, October 10, at 7 pm in the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Commissioners will discuss efforts to route truck traffic around downtown, with a possible vote set for later this month if the board agrees on a plan. Get the full agenda at this link. The Chatham County School Board meets Monday, October 10, at 6 pm at Chatham Grove Elementary School, with an agenda that includes long-term capital improvement plans for 2024-2030. Read the full agenda here. And the Durham County Board of Commissioners meets Monday, October 10, at 7 pm in commissioners’ chambers. Commissioners will get a progress report from a bond referendum committee co-chaired by former mayors Bill Bell and Steve Schewel, and they’ll hold a public hearing as they take another look at the Mason Farms Development.
