(Anna Gratzer/Anna Gratzer) The killing has left victim Frederick Bolden Jr.’s family searching for answers — while his sister confronts an unfathomable choice about whether to support her boyfriend, who’s behind bars awaiting trial for murder. “She’s probably confused. She’s in the middle. She’s in a very hard position. You’re in the middle of your boyfriend and your family,” said Ratasha Irvin, mother to Bolden and his sister, Sakida Irvin. “If you support your family, you’re letting down your boyfriend, someone you’ve been with for a while and love. If you support your boyfriend, you’re letting down your family.” She said she was focusing on Sakida’s mental well-being. I just know that my baby is gone and I have a child who is stuck in the middle,” Ratasha Irvin said. Jean-Gilles, 32, and Bolden, 22, clashed inside Canarsie One Stop Market at the corner on E. 87th St. and Avenue L, just a few blocks away from their Canarsie home. The quarrel spilled onto the street. There, Jean-Gilles was caught on video repeatedly stabbing Bolden in the torso, according to a criminal complaint. He was arrested that day and remains held without bail on murder and weapon-possession charges. Pals of both men told the news that the fight seemingly came out of nowhere, although one friend told the Daily News that Jean-Gilles had started carrying a knife because he’d come to feel bullied and threatened. “People around tried to stop it,” said the friend, who identified himself as “Eboi.” “(Jean-Gilles) felt like he was being bullied. It was a known thing.” A pool of blood remains on the sidewalk as NYPD officers search for evidence during their investigation of a stabbing on East 87th Street near Avenue L in Canarsie, Saturday, Sep. 24, 2022. The men lived in a house owned by Bolden’s grandmother, Linda Phillips, a retired pastor who adorned the walls with artwork depicting Jesus and his disciples, along with photos of her eight grandkids. Phillips said she was stern with her grandchildren when they were growing up, making sure they accompanied her to church on Sundays. Bolden, who wasn’t working at the time of the killing, used to deliver food for Uber Eats. His grandmother described him as determined and protective, a music lover and the father of a young girl who lived with her mother in Georgia. “He had a tendency to be protective,” Phillips said. “Anybody he loved, he was protective of. He was a person if he put his mind to something, he got it done.” Memorial for the victim Frederick Bolden Jr., who was stabbed to death by his sister’s boyfriend. The victim and his brothers played youth football and shared a basketball hoop with their next-door neighbors, according to the grieving grandmother. She quoted the Bible when talking about Bolden’s death, repeating the line, “Love one another as I love you.” “Some of us don’t know how to identify love. Some of us don’t know how to identify peace. They go hand in hand,” Phillips said, adding that if she could talk to Jean-Gilles, she’d tell him, “God loves you. And I love you, too. This is me as a person. I’m not a person of bitterness or anger. I’m not tit-for-tat. I like joy, I like laughter. I would say Frederick had those things, too.” Jean-Gilles’ parents, who previously lived near Bolden’s house, declined to comment Sunday. “I didn’t have a problem with (Jean-Gilles). Nobody ever is going to be good enough for my baby. She’s my only girl,” Ratasha Irvin said. “I don’t know if it had something to do with outside. We get bits and pieces of ‘He said, she said.’ I want to know why, but we probably will never know the truth,” She added, “I just want peace. I honestly don’t care what anybody thinks as long as it doesn’t cause any harm to my children.” The Daily News Flash Weekdays Catch up on the day’s top five stories every weekday afternoon. In my heart of hearts, I want to believe that this is not what he’s trying to do,” she said. “I’ve never seen him get angry. I’ve never seen him get violent. For all I know, he was scared.” The sister, Sakida Irvin, was too emotional to speak Sunday. She had been dating Jean-Gilles, who used to work as a line cook, for several years before moving into the house in January, Ratasha Irvin said. “Nothing I do or say will bring Frederick (back). I carried him for nine months and I nurtured him. I did the same for her. And she’s still here. I love them the same,” she said. “Just like I’d fight to the last breath for Fredrick, I’d do the same for her. The last thing she needs is for someone to be against her. She’s grateful Bolden’s young daughter is in her life, she said. “He left us a little mini version.” Related Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Telegram Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
