She moved up eight spots on the leaderboard with that performance, tying her best finish ever in the event. “I think this week I just wanted to come out here and try to have my best finish after last year,” Scherer said. “I wanted to rebound after shooting 83-84 last year and that was my worst state tournament.” She managed her game well Saturday, finishing with five bogeys and a nifty birdie on the 15th hole. Trojan coach Ken Suratt thought his star played one of her finest rounds. “She had her driver working but, more importantly, she had her putter working,” he said. “She was very strategic in her thinking. She kept everything below the hole today and I think she might have missed two putts inside of 10 feet all day. She was she was saving par from every place.” St. James Regional School student Kiera Yun was the only local player to score worse on day two of the tournament. After shooting a 79 in the opening round, she was one over through five, but finished the outer nine with three bogeys and a double en route to an 82 and a T-17 finish. Central Hardin senior Katie Gray improved two shots from the first round, battling the extremely cold temperatures to shoot 85 and finish T-42 with a 172 total. “She hit some phenomenal golf shots but she got some of the worst breaks that I’ve seen on a golf course,” her coach and father Paul Gray said. “Today, she had some great shots that paid off nothing. It was just really hard kind of hard for her to accept.” Gray also collected her best finish in her sixth and final state tournament appearance. “My putting and chipping just weren’t as good as usual,” she said. “It didn’t go well and I’m not super happy with how I did. I would have a better score if it was on an easier course, but the greens at Bowling Green are hard and fast.” Peyton Bradley of Meade County finished the tournament with an 84 and a two-day total of 174. That placed her at T-47. North Hardin sophomore Anna Mae Atcher shot 91-89 and was T-59. Great careers for the two seniors Scherer and Gray combined for 12 state tournament appearances, and both soaked up the experience on the final day. “It started to hit me walking up No. 18 that it was my last hole as a high school golfer,” Scherer said “I just wanted to end on a good note. I didn’t hit a very good drive but ended up making par.” Suratt will miss not just Scherer the golfer but also Scherer the person. “I’m not talking about her on course play, but also her character and morals,” he said. “We have a very young team and they got to see Ella and how hard she worked. She taught them how to practice and how you’re supposed to dedicate yourself if you want to get better.” The day was a family affair for Katie Gray. Not only was her father walking every step of the way with her, but her mother and sister were there to support her in her last high school round. “I really enjoyed that,” she said. “It’s really a special thing for me to be able to have my dad as my coach and to share those moments and to really get that time together. With my mom and sister there, I liked knowing that they love me and support me even when I’m not playing well.” It was a bittersweet day for Paul Gray, seeing his daughter finish her career. After the round, he reminisced about her progression. “She’s come a long way since the first tournament she ever played in and out at Lindsey Golf Course,” he said. “She shot like a 132. Then I watch her out there today and think about she has grown into a really solid and strong golfer.” .
