Nick Roy is a local man on a mission to preserve the last of an endangered species. A good, ol-fashioned dive bar without the frills. Roy has developed a free mapping tool in order to help Bostonians find the best remaining places where they can find a nice draft on tap and a reasonably priced meal. “Really the goal is just if you’re in Boston, where’s the closet dive bar? How do I get there the quickest ?, ”said Roy. Bostondives.com will direct you to the closest dive bars and possibly provide some money-saving tips as well. “I think there’s still places to be found and that was kind of what I wanted to highlight on the map, was not the you know, here the the cool foodie dish, but here’s the local places that are still hanging on and places we need to support, ”said Roy. Julius Sokol, a local dive bar owner, is appreciative of Roy’s reverence for a “A dive bar is great because it gives you that neighborhood feel that you can’t get at a lot of places. You can’t create a dive bar, you either have always been a dive bar, or you’re not a dive bar, ”said Sokol. “It brings back that feeling before the internet, before the cell phones, if you want to come to see your friends, you can meet them at the local bar.” Sokol believes the mapping website will boost business. “The mapping app is a great idea, because it really helps people coming from out of town who really want that dive bar feel and to really understand what the neighborhood is all about, and a lot of times dive bars don’t advertise,” said Sokol The website has been a hit. More so than Roy expected. “It’s been 8000 people that have used it in the last month, which is 8000 more than I expected,” said Roy. “People were messaging me, I’m coming over from Germany in November, what would you recommend? I was like wow, this is actually way more than I ever thought it would be. “ Nick Roy says he doesn’t have a real methodical approach to who gets posted – he likes to find places that are locally owned and says cheap drinks and unpretentious food are two big plusses.
