Now, it’s all but official. After failing to appear for a mandatory workout Friday, the veteran lefty reliever was fined and told to stay away from the club until further notice. Yankees officials had yet to hold their roster meeting for the best-of-five Division Series against Cleveland, but Chapman “effectively took himself out of at least this round of consideration,” said general manager Brian Cashman. Chapman, 34, will be a free agent in November. MLB POSTSEASON SCHEDULE: Divisional playoff game times, TV info Aroldis Chapman stays home Speaking during Sunday’s workout at Yankee Stadium, Cashman said that the ex-Yankees closer flew home to Miami following Wednesday’s regular season finale. Chapman remained at home instead of showing up to pitch a scheduled live batting practice in the Bronx. Prepping the Yankee hitters for opposing pitchers might have been his only postseason role. “He made a decision not to show, so I fined him,” said Cashman. “You’ve got to be all in at this time of year. It’s disappointing.” Both Cashman and manager Aaron Boone spoke to Chapman by phone, and the GM also spoke with the reliever’s agents. Boone made the decision that Chapman stay home due to the lefty’s actions and unacceptable excuse. “I’ve had him stay away for now,” said Boone. “I just felt like him not being here (Friday) was not OK. It was best for him to stay away now.” As to why Chapman chose to be a no-show, well, “I think he questioned whether he was going to be on the (postseason) roster or not.” Either way, “he needed to be here,” said a disappointed Boone. Brian Cashman ‘ It’ s not surprising‘ Given Chapman’s shaky command all season, having lost the closer’s job to Clay Holmes in May, he was unlikely to be part of the ALDS staff. But Holmes (shoulder), Wandy Peralta (back) and Ron Marinaccio (shin) are coming off injuries, providing an outside chance that Chapman might be in consideration for a later round. Story continues That ship has likely sailed now, although the Yankees did not completely close the door. Summarizing the Chapman situation, Cashman described a pitcher who had already checked out of the 2022 season. Although the GM said it was initially “a little shocking” that Chapman chose to remain home instead of pitching live BP, “it’s not surprising” when you add it all up. “There’s some questions about whether he’s been all in or not” this year, Cashman said. Despite having “verbally maintained” his understanding about being replaced as closer and accepting his standing on the club, “at times actions don’t match those words,” Cashman said. A history of disappointing Octobers A seven-time All-Star (three times as a Yankee, including 2021), Chapman pitched to a 6.98 ERA from May 14 through Aug. 19, after which he landed on the injured list due to a leg infection from a tattoo. Cashman essentially said it wasn’t wise for any player to receive an in-season tattoo, due to such risks, but that disappointing episode wasn’t something that merited disciplinary action. But it didn’t help Chapman’s already shaky standing. Originally acquired by the Yankees as a distressed asset in a trade from Cincinnati before the 2016 season, due to an incident of domestic abuse, Chapman was traded that summer to the Chicago Cubs in a deal that netted Gleyber Torres. Chapman was part of the Cubs’ historic World Series champs and re-signed with the Yanks as a free agent that winter. Currently in the final season of a three-year, $48 million deal, Chapman will mostly be remembered around Yankees Universe for surrendering the pennant-winning homer to Houston’s Jose Altuve in 2019 and Mike Brosseau’s go-ahead homer in Tampa Bay’s 2020 ALDS victory. Chapman’s Bronx chapter essentially ends in another walk-off. “There’s no legitimate reason why he wasn’t here (Friday),” Cashman said.
