An absolutely thrilling match started with a bang, as Gabriel Martinelli fired the hosts into the lead just 58 seconds in. His goal was the quickest Arsenal have scored in a league match at the Emirates since October 2011. The goal also marked the tenth time the Reds had conceded first in their past 12 league matches. Liverpool thought they may have earned a penalty after Diogo Jota's cross hit Gabriel Magalhaes' hand in the box, but no call was forthcoming. The Premier League confirmed to The Athletic that the penalty was not awarded due to Gabriel’s proximity to the ball, with the Arsenal defender deemed to have no time to react to Jota’s pass. Liverpool would not trail for much longer, as Darwin Nunez equalised in the 34th minute. Gabriel was guilty of misplaying a clearance in the buildup. Arsenal took their second lead of the day just seconds before half-time, as Saka tapped-in at the far post after Martinelli led a quick counter-attack. Gabriel's dummy for Saka made up for the defender's earlier mistake. Liverpool responded well early in the second half, controlling play and levelling the score again, this time through Roberto Firmino in the 53rd minute. Arsenal would not be denied on this day though, as they pressed on and eventually won a penalty as Michael Oliver ruled Gabriel Jesus was fouled in the box. Saka coolly converted from the spot in the 76th minute for his second goal and Arsenal's third lead of the match. This was just Arsenal's second win over Liverpool in their last 15 Premier League meetings. Jurgen Klopp's men have failed to win any of their first four away league matches of the season for the first time since 2010. We have been working hard and we deserve the win and we need to keep going because the season is long and we want to achieve good things. We are running for each other and we are a family, everyone is on their toes and we deserved the win. "It doesn't matter your age, it's your heart and how much you want to achieve in football and life. That is the most important thing. We need to believe and go game by game trying to win all of them." Bukayo Saka: "In the past two or three years, Liverpool have been a team we have struggled against. To win in front of our fans is special and it shows how much we are progressing. "It gives us more confidence because they are a fantastic team and we have a lot of respect for them. I feel like we deserved to lead at half time so to get that goal was crucial. I want to score more now." On his winning penalty: "I had what I was going to do in my mind and I stuck with it." Michael Dominski· Live Reporter October 9, 2022 at 2:21 PM EDT Arteta' s reaction to massive win Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Mikel Arteta had nothing but praise for Arsenal's man of the match, Gabriel Martinelli. On his opening goal: "It was the best way to start because of the belief it generates in the stadium, so we're really happy. "When you see where (Martinelli) is a year ago from when he played against Brentford to where he is today is phenomenal but it is his desire to train hard every day. It is a nightmare to play against him and we know we have a real threat up front." On the match: "We could not get out [before half-time] because we were not good in our buildup and to play the ball inside is very difficult. We started to lose some duels and we needed to hang in there to get to half time." On his half-time team talk: "It was lively but we wanted to give confidence and tell them the game was there for the taking. (In the second half) the organisation was better, the timing of the press, we won every second ball. "I was really happy. You are always in doubt with the changes and how many players they were putting on but the players dealt with it with a lot of maturity and composure." On Bukayo Saka's winning penalty: "He practices every day but it's different in training when we put him under pressure to here today but credit to the boy, especially with what happened a year ago (at the Euro final)." Klopp told the BBC: “The situation around the penalty, of course we should have cleared it. “Now I saw it and I think you can imagine I don’t think it is a clear penalty, it is a very soft one. I think it is a situation where the referee should have another look at it in real time. “A couple of things went against us but we are not blind, we see we could have done better in moments. In general it was a good away game against a good side. We caused them a lot of problems but stand here with no points.” Klopp confirmed that both Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz suffered injuries: “(Alexander-Arnold) is injured unfortunately. Like Luis Diaz as well, it doesn’t look good for both. That is the icing on the cake.” Michael Dominski· Live Reporter October 9, 2022 at 2:07 PM EDT Ex-Gunner Iwobi scores vs Manchester United Former Arsenal player Alex Iwobi has fired Everton in front of Manchester United with a magnificent goal in the first six minutes of their Premier League match.
