Scholarship to Address Underrepresentation in Medicine
Cleveland Clinic seeks to increase representation from groups that have been historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM) and has established a scholarship for that purpose. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to spend time learning firsthand what it is like to be a resident at Cleveland Clinic and to meet with residents, faculty and program directors to understand Cleveland Clinic values. Our program’s mission is to develop future clinical, academic and educational leaders, and we are committed to further enhancing the diversity of our trainees and graduates. Ten students (nine for medicine and one for pharmacy) will be chosen annually to participate in this program. Successful applicants can rank up to three clinical specialties for the rotation. A $2,500 stipend and free on-campus housing are provided to successful applicants. Students need to meet the guidelines listed for electives in general (with the exception of the application fee). View the Requirements and Frequently Asked Questions to the right for details. The scholarships are funded by the Cleveland Clinic Education Institute in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Graduate Medical Education. During the four-week clinical rotation, you will spend time with the teams that care for patients on either outpatient or inpatient clinical services. You will be paired with an advisor who will facilitate your stay and direct you to the appropriate resources. The advisor will also serve as a mentor, offering career guidance during your rotation at Cleveland Clinic. You will be given a list of conferences that will take place during the rotation along with the time necessary to attend these conferences. A resident from the House Staff Association will be assigned to help you find your way around campus and Cleveland. You will meet with the Director of Graduate Medical Education or their delegate to learn more about Cleveland Clinic's training programs. You will also meet with the residency program director of the specialty in which the rotation is taking place, and you will be invited to social events with other scholarship recipients. "The best part of the experience for me was the hospitality. From the minute I arrived, everyone was welcoming and made sure I had everything I needed. Everyone made me feel at ease. There was never a moment that I felt like someone didn't have my back or wasn't helpful, including all the residents and program directors. I loved it."– Kereen Constant, Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, DC "The opportunity to be involved in patient care was the best part of the rotation.
