Questions 216.445.2224 Appointments & Locations Take the First Step Learn More The Intragastric Balloon System was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration this summer, providing new nonsurgical treatment options for patients who failed previous attempts at weight loss through diet and exercise alone. The introduction of intragastric balloon therapy for Americans will allow patients access to a minimally invasive nonsurgical approach to treat obesity and weight-related disease. Overall, the FDA approval of the balloon is an important aid in the battle to stem the tide of obesity. Why does Intragastric Balloon cause weight loss? Reduces the amount of food you can eat Increases the feeling of being fuller longer Designed to fit comfortably in the stomach Managed weight loss system team of experts Will my insurance cover the Balloon? The intragastric balloon is currently not covered by insurance. How Is Intragastric Balloon Procedure Performed? The Intragastric Balloon System is implanted in the stomach via a 30-minute minimally invasive endoscopic outpatient procedure while the patient is under mild sedation. Once in place, the balloon device is inflated with a sterile solution. The balloon partially fills the stomach to provide a feeling of satiety. What happens after the Procedure? The balloon is removed after six months, at which time patients remain in a structured dietary program to maintain weight loss. A recent study revealed patients lost an average of 10.2 percent of their body weight. Success with intragastric balloon placement is also dependent on participation in the nutritional and exercise programs that are an important component of our comprehensive balloon therapy program. You will be meeting with all members of our team, including our interventional endoscopist who performs the procedure, as well as specialists in nutrition and exercise management. Am I candidate for the Intragastric Balloon System? If you're significantly overweight and want to make a lifestyle change, you may be a candidate for the Intragastric Balloon System at the Cleveland Clinic. The devices are for use in obese adult patients with a body mass index between 30 and 40. What's the next step?
