The Creeping MS Symptoms

By Trevis GleasonFor Life With Multiple SclerosisReviewed: March 27, 2013Everyday Health BlogsFact-CheckedI knew a guy with MS whose symptoms started with a slight tingling at the end of his index finger. That tingling turned to numbness and it crept right up the musician’s finger, hand and up his arm. When I last saw this lad, his arm was all but useless to him. Multiple Sclerosis doesn’t always (or even often, to my knowledge) work that way, but I’ve had a new and creeping symptom this week so I thought I’d share. A few days ago I took our dog Sadie out into the back garden for a pee. It was a bright, if cold, day and I enjoyed the feeling of the sun on my face as herself searched for just the right spot to empty. By the time I came back into the house it felt like I’d been wearing toeless sandals on my left foot. The first and second toes beyond my big toe were very cold. They were cold to the point that I mentioned it to Caryn. It was as though I had holes in my shoes, but I let it go… until later in the night. By the time we got into bed, the “cold” feeling was replaced with a deep ache that radiated from the ends of the toes through to the joints and felt as if I may have broken them a few days before. Morning found them about the same, but by afternoon, a burning line of tightness extended from the toes, across my foot and up the outside of my calf muscle. At about this time, the pain at its original toes had changed to hypersensitivity and even sox were painful to feel against the skin and the calf “line” continued to burn. It’s been over 72hrs now and it’s been accompanied with some fatigue and – I’m sure Caryn will confirm – a shortness of temper and a quick finger on the frustration trigger. Though I’m officially “progressive”, I’d have to say that this is a defined worsening of symptoms. Damn! I’m just going to see where this one goes, I’m not going to go down the worry path that has me using a walker to get to the bathroom. I’ll just note, try to get around, hope that it won’t get better but plan for if it does. How about you; have you ever had a “creeping” symptom that starts in a place and progresses up a body part? I’d be very interested (as, I’m sure, would be our blog community. Wishing you and your family the best of health.
