Cedars-Sinai has joined the U.S.-United Arab Emirates Business Council to better provide care for patients traveling from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for specialized care, and to develop stronger ties with private and public healthcare organizations in the Arabian Gulf region. The council will help Cedars-Sinai provide guidance and culturally appropriate care to Emirati patients, fostering better access to healthcare services that have helped Cedars-Sinai build a reputation as a global leader in patient care and research. Patients will benefit from improved access, care coordination and guidance on navigating the complex relationship between international governments, insurance companies and healthcare providers, said Heitham Hassoun, MD, vice president and medical director of the Cedars-Sinai Center for International Health. "We are advocates and liaisons for our international patients," Hassoun said. Cedars-Sinai treats about 1,200 international patients from more than 80 countries each year, about one-third of whom come from Arabian Gulf countries. The Center for International Health aims to improve access to healthcare services to these patients and others around the world, and to create global collaborations in the fields of medicine and research. "Oftentimes, patients reach out to us directly because they're seeking specialized care in one of our areas of excellence, including the neurosciences, heart, orthopaedics and cancer," Hassoun said. Building strong relationships with healthcare communities in other countries helps strengthen referral pipelines, connecting patients with the best available care. The business council, headquartered in Washington, D.C., also will serve as a platform for further collaboration opportunities between Cedars-Sinai and UAE healthcare companies, insurance providers and clinical staff. By joining the U.S-United Arab Emirates Business Council, Cedars-Sinai will benefit from the council's expertise in creating these strategic partnerships.
