Photo by Cedars-Sinai. Nurse Maureen Chin, RN The Beverly Press recently interviewed Ophir D. Klein MD, PhD, inaugural executive director of Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's, and Maureen Chin, MSN, RN, associate director of the Department of Pediatrics, about the new 26-bed Guerin Children’s healthcare facility that will offer specialized care for children when it opens later this summer. Guerin Children's will offer highly specialized care for children in neonatology, gastroenterology, cardiac services, orthopaedics and neurology, among other areas. The new center will enable Cedars-Sinai to bring together all its children's services in one location for the first time, Klein said. "Our vision is to have a program which is going to become a real national and international destination,” Klein told the Beverly Press. “It's going to be one of the best places for tertiary and quaternary [highly specialized] pediatric care in the country. And we want to combine the best clinical care with translational and basic science academics so that we can bring the latest advances to patients." In the new 23,000-square-foot facility, Klein highlighted the patient room design, which allows two caregivers to stay and sleep near their child. “The biggest difference this facility is going to make is it’s going to provide a state-of-the-art environment to care for kids and their families,” he told the Beverly Press. The new center was designed to improve the wellbeing of children during their stay at Cedars-Sinai, Chin told the Beverly Press. The facility includes colorful artwork, a healing garden, a game and movie room with interactive screens, and a family lounge. "The other nice thing about this unit is that we built an onstage and offstage part. We want to make sure these hallways that your kids are in will not have a lot of the … things you normally encounter in hospitals," Chin told the Beverly Press.
