The program provides shadowing and mentorship, as well as a glimpse into what it means to be a physician today. The program offers students a chance to gauge and affirm their interest in medicine as a career. We are driven to be diverse and inclusive. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students from educationally or economically under-resourced communities, who have not previously shadowed healthcare providers. Applications for spring 2023 will open Nov. 28 and close Dec. 1. Click the “Apply Now” button below during these dates to submit your application. We will not be able to accept any late submissions. The spring rotation will run from approximately Feb. 13 until April 21, 2023. Apply Now What to Expect We are thrilled to announce the return of in-person shadowing of physicians by pre-med volunteers at Cedars-Sinai. Over the 8- to 10-week program, pre-med volunteers will be assigned to a team of mentors within a specific specialty. Volunteers may shadow physicians on patient clinic visits, rounds, grand rounds, collaboration meetings and even into the operating room if they are assigned to a surgical specialty. The program includes weekly meetings with guest physicians to hear about their journeys into and through medicine. Important Changes to the Program As part of our ongoing commitment to our patients and staff, we incorporated a volunteer service component into the program. From July 1, 2022, to be considered for a place in the Pre-Med Volunteer Program, you will need to have completed a minimum of 100 hours in an adult volunteer position at Cedars-Sinai within the past two years. We have many fantastic programs that will allow you to gain insights into how different departments operate and provide opportunities to interact with patients at the bedside. Student Eligibility Must be at least 18 years old Must provide proof of COVID-19 and flu vaccination Must have completed at least one semester of college Show a minimum GPA of 3.3 Submit an online application Participate in group interview if selected Pass a background check Attend online orientation Must be available to attend all sessions Have reliable transportation to commute to Cedars-Sinai Must have completed a minimum of 100 adult volunteer hours at Cedars-Sinai Mandatory Commitments Must be available to shadow mentors a minimum of six hours per week Must be available to attend weekly Wednesday meetings from 4–6 p.m. Log volunteer hours after each meeting and shadowing session Adhere to strict policies, guidelines and expectations regarding behavior, communication, confidentiality, privacy, shadowing, operating room protocols, and those set out by each related department Programs Available to Complete Prerequisite Volunteer Hours Below is a list of some of our active volunteer programs. Within two weeks of submitting your application, someone from our office will reach out to you to schedule an interview. At the interview we will get to know you and learn about your volunteering goals. We will discuss these programs in more detail with you, then find a program that fits those goals and your schedule. Transforming Care at Bedside (TCAB) TCAB volunteers are placed on the nursing units throughout the hospital. They assist with clerical and administrative tasks, answering phones, call lights, and assisting patients and family members. Once you build up some rapport with the nursing staff, you can shadow them around the units and into patient rooms. You will learn how the individual units are run and see how all the different departments come together to provide care for patients. The uniform requires you to wear black or white scrubs with the volunteer jacket. Shift times Shifts are available Monday-Sunday between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Requirements Attend TCAB orientation Wear black or white scrubs with the volunteer jacket APPLY Emergency Department (ED) If you are over 21, then you can apply to be an ED volunteer. The ED is our most diverse environment, and volunteers assist all staff in the department by directing patients, setting up the patient rooms/beds, escorting patients and families to their rooms when available, providing support and comfort to patients and families, and generally helping staff where needed. Be prepared to walk 5 or more miles per shift. Shift times Shifts are available Monday-Sunday between 7 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Requirements Must be at least 21 years old Attend Emergency Department training Wear black or white scrubs with the volunteer jacket, or black or white pants (no ripped, torn or faded jeans) with a white or black shirt (not showing the midriff) APPLY Surgical Lobby Information Desks Each of the surgical floors in the hospital has an information desk in the waiting room. Volunteers at these desks help greet patients/families and answer any questions they may have. Volunteers communicate with the nursing staff and escort patients/families back to the pre-op and post-op areas once the team is ready for them. Shift times Shifts are available Monday-Friday between 8:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Requirements Wear black or white scrubs with the volunteer jacket, or black or white pants (no ripped, torn or faded jeans) with a white or black shirt (not showing the midriff) APPLY Radiation Oncology Volunteers assist with greeting patients, providing comfort and support in the waiting area, escorting patients to the exam rooms, and general tasks requested by nursing. You will be close to the doctors and techs in the core area where they view scans, etc., so you also will get a behind-the-scenes look at what they do. APPLY Breast Center The Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center—A Project of Women's Guild is a newly renovated building on the corner of San Vicente Blvd. and Beverly Blvd. Breast center volunteers help with greeting patients, assisting staff, escorting patients, and providing general comfort and support to people in the waiting areas. This role is only for volunteers who identify as women.
