Are you a basketball player or spectator? If you're a fan of the orange ball, you'll have noticed a few differences between the matches you play and the ones you watch on TV.

We're not talking about the level of play or how many dunks there are, but about differences in rules between the basketball you might see if you watch a match on the other side of the Atlantic and the rules when you play basketball in a club.

So, which answers do you think apply to US basketball on TV, and which rules are used for European basketball out on the court? Test your knowledge with this quiz! Try to answer all the questions and you'll find the answers at the end of the article... no cheating!

1 You' ve just finished warming up and a jump ball will start the match You will have a game of

Four quarters of 10 minutes each, great for intense play.

2 Your speciality is long-range shots Your wrist is warmed up and you' re ready to go from behind the three-point line which is

Shame, you had grabbed the tip-off ball. Possession goes to the opposing team

5 You' re defending hard A little too hard and you' re given your fifth foul

On your next foul, you'll be sent out of the game. You'll have to defend more carefully for the last 30 minutes of the game!

6 Speaking of hard defence why would the referee award you 2 free throws for a foul

Counting technical fouls, you already have 5 team fouls for the quarter.

7 Trying to make the referee see your side of things has never really helped anyone win a match particularly when you commit a technical foul and

You could be fined in addition to the free throw being awarded to the other team.

8 Your speciality is playing in the key and more specifically rebounds

You won't be pulled up for an illegal block, rebounds are all about placement and timing.

9 The opposing team gets to their centre too easily and punishes you with penetration

It's time to get back in the zone, that will limit passes towards the inside.

10 It' s the start of the season and time to choose your new jersey number

It's up to you to choose your favourite number between 4 and 15, but avoid number 23.

On the courts: Answers 1a, 2b, 3a, 4a, 5b, 6a, 7b, 8b, 9a, and 10a correspond to international rules, which apply to the basketball you play in a club. With some small changesfrom October 2018, a team who commits a technical foul whilst they have the ball will no longer lose possession of the ball after the free throw.

On TV: answers 1b, 2a, 3b, 4b, 5a, 6b, 7a, 8a, 9b, and 10b correspond to US rules, which you'll see if your love of basketball means you're willing to get up in the middle of the night to watch the matches.
