The tennis forehand is the first shot to add to your skill set. It’s an essential move allowing you to keep a game going and score some serious points from the baseline or anywhere for that matter. Follow these 4 steps and you should have one of the fastest shots on the court.
Step 1 Preparation
Getting in proper forehand position is the most important element of hitting the ball. It sets the foundation for good footwork and racquet preparation which gives you the power, control and balance to produce an excellent forehand.Stay on your toes and pivot your foot in the direction while the ball is coming towards you. Allowing for quick movement to get to the ball a crucial step for a properly timed backswing. Get into a proper forehand stance and once you have reached the desired position. With knees slightly bent, shoulders turned sideways, left hand stretched out in front of you or the opposite if left handed, your racquet should be behind your body in position for the backswing.
Step 2 Backswing The Main Technique In Your Forehand
Take your racket back with your elbow close to your body. Your left shoulder (or right) should be facing the net with arm out for balance, leaning slightly on your back leg preparing to shift the weight to the front. While looping your racket in a circular motion, move your weight onto the front leg and load your body for power to hit the ball.
Step 3 Swinging And Making Contact
Gripping your racquet tightly, using either your semi-western or eastern grip keep your eye on the ball and turn your body towards its’ direction.Locking your elbow, continue looping the racquet to the level of the ball, bending your front leg slightlyFor a flat shot, keep your racquet face straight as your ball contacts the sweet spot on the racquet face. For topspin, close your racquet face slightly and brush the ball to give it a good speed or defend against faster shots.
Step 4 Follow Through Technique For The Perfect Tennis Forehand
After contact, continue keep your head down and move your racquet in the direction you want the ball to travel towards. This helps you to keep your balance for the transition onto your next shot. Finish your follow through by keeping your arm relaxed and ensuring your racquet is completely past your shoulder. Then get back into proper position for the next volley or shot.
