Mayo Clinic experts have extensive experience using IMRT to treat many types of cancers and noncancerous tumors. More than 2,000 people undergo IMRT at Mayo Clinic each year. Radiation oncologists at Mayo Clinic consider IMRT using photons or protons to be ideal for treating appropriately selected people with: Anal cancer Benign and malignant brain tumors Benign and malignant head and neck tumors Bone cancer Breast cancer Esophageal cancer Eye tumors Liver cancer Lung cancer Lymphoma Pancreatic cancer Rectal cancer Skull base tumors Soft tissue sarcoma Solid tumors in children Spine tumors Stomach cancer Your Mayo Clinic care team
Mayo Clinic's highly trained radiation oncology team includes radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, oncology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology nurses, treatment planners (dosimetrists) and medical physicists. Your radiation oncology team works closely with medical oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, other medical specialists and other experts to coordinate the best care for you. Advanced radiation treatment planning and delivery
Mayo Clinic doctors use the latest imaging techniques to carefully plan radiation treatments. Doctors use CT scans, MRI scans and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to create a treatment plan that targets just the tumor. Careful planning before IMRT allows doctors to use higher doses of radiation to treat the tumor, while sparing the nearby healthy tissue from damage. Proton beam therapy facilities at Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona and Minnesota use intensity-modulated pencil beam scanning. This advanced treatment technology permits more-precise distribution of radiation therapy with fewer side effects. Mayo Clinic radiation oncologists also use a more advanced form of photon-based IMRT called volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT). VMAT exposes healthy tissue to less radiation. VMAT treatment takes a fraction of the time it takes to perform traditional IMRT using photons. Nationally recognized expertise
