Treatment experience

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was among one of the first medical centers to use cochlear implants to treat children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). Mayo Clinic's cochlear implant team has successfully treated a large number of children with ANSD who didn't benefit from hearing aids.

Research

Mayo Clinic has a long history of participation in research involving innovations of hardware and software used in cochlear implantation and programming. Specific efforts include studies of cochlear implants for hearing loss in one ear (unilateral) in adults and children, improved electrodes and implant technology, ways to preserve natural acoustic hearing after cochlear implant surgery, and the use of cochlear implants in people with vestibular schwannomas. Other areas of research focus on children, including efforts to determine the effectiveness of cochlear implants for children with less severe hearing loss.
