Die vorliegende Monographie arbeitet die eigenständige gesellschaftstheoretische Konzeption des deutsch-jüdischstämmigen Soziologen Louis Wirth (1897-1952) heraus und zeigt die Aktualität der Arbeiten der Chicagoer Schule. Wirth hat sich in innovativer Weise mit den Bedingungen sozialer Ordnung und gesellschaftlicher Integration beschäftigt und bereits in der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts eine Soziologie der Moderne entworfen. Innovativ ist Wirths Perspektive insofern er sich als einer der ersten Soziologen überhaupt einer Untersuchung sozialer Integrationsformen in dauerhaft heterogenen Gesellschaften zugewandt hat. Es ist das Verdienst dieser Arbeit, die Konzeption einer schon früh für die Moderne aufgeschlossenen Soziologie, die sich für jedes kulturkritische Lamento verbietet und die Dinge in die Zukunft hinein denkt, aus den verstreuten Arbeiten Wirths herauszuarbeiten.
