In forschungsintensiven Industrien arbeiten junge, innovative Unternehmen immer häufiger mit etablierten Marktspielern zusammen. Den einen fließt damit Geld zu, das der Kapitalmarkt derzeit kaum bereitstellt, die anderen hoffen, durch die Unternehmenskooperation Innovationslücken schließen zu können.

Markus Solf untersucht, ob das Modell "Finanzierung als Gegenleistung für zukünftige Forschungsergebnisse" eine Basis für langfristig erfolgreiche Kooperationen bieten kann. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Zusammenarbeit nach der Überwindung von Ressourcenrestriktionen beendet wird, wenn diese und nicht die verbesserte Transferierbarkeit von Wissen und Anlagevermögen der Grund für die Kooperationsbildung war. Unternehmenskooperationen eignen sich somit nur als Mittel der Unternehmensfinanzierung, wenn ein ausreichendes Maß an Transferierbarkeit sichergestellt werden kann. Entscheidend hierfür ist die Gestaltung des Vertrags: Dieser sollte Kriterien zur Outputmessung und zur Institutionalisierung der Beziehungen sowie Regelungen für Streitfälle enthalten.
