Behandelt werden die Regulationsmechanismen auf der Ebene der Transkription, Translation und Posttranslation, die die Entwicklung der Organellen in eukaryotischen Zellen bestimmen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Ausdifferenzierung von Chloroplasten und Mitochondrien in Abhängigkeit von interner Adaptation und externen Faktoren. Auf die Koordination der Regulationssignale des Kerns mit denen der Organellen wird ausführlich eingegangen. Das Buch führt auf der Grundlage der herkömmlichen Lehrbücher für Botanik, Genetik oder Zoologie an den augenblicklichen Stand in der molekularbiologischen Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Organellenontogenese heran.
