Männlichkeit ist nichts Gottgegebenes, sondern ein Konstrukt. Nicht grundlos tritt Männlichkeit in der modernen Forschung nur noch im Plural "Männlichkeiten" auf. Der Begriff hat seine strenge kategoriale Gültigkeit verloren, die Grenzen zwischen den Geschlechtern diffundieren. Sowohl Feuilleton, Populärliteratur, Film wie wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen spiegeln heute Männlichkeit zumindest als sozialpsychologisch begründete "Deformation", deren "Bewältigungsprinzipien" von der anglo-amerikanischen Forschung längst aufgezeigt wurden. Namhafte Gender-Forschende haben sich im vorliegenden Band mit der "Krisenfigur Mann" auseinandergesetzt und gehen ihren kulturellen, d.h. visuellen, literarischen und sozio-historischen Repräsentationen auf den Grund.
