Das politische System Italiens hat sich in den 90er Jahren radikal verändert. Die Lega Nord, selbst Produkt der politischen und ökonomischen Krise des Landes, hat den Wandel entscheidend vorangetrieben; sie gehört als regionalistische Bewegung und Partei zu den wichtigsten politischen Innovationen und reagiert auf die durch den europäischen Integrationsprozeß verschärften sozioökonomischen Spannungen und die Krise des italienischen Nationalstaats. Die von der Lega Nord angebotenen Lösungen stoßen in einem geopolitisch klar abgegrenzten Raum, dem ökonomisch erfolgreichen Nordosten Italiens, auf breiten Konsens und fordern die staatlichen Institutionen und die auf nationaler Ebene organisierten Parteien radikal heraus. Der Wechsel zwischen spektakulären Aktionen, Subversionen gegen den Einheitsstaat und ernstzunehmenden Reformvorschlägen macht die Lega Nord zu einem der schillerndsten politischen Phänomene in der politischen Landschaft Italiens der 90er Jahre. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie stehen die Fragen, woraus die innovative Kraft der Lega Nord resultiert und über welches Reformpotential sie verfügt. Darüber hinaus wird diskutiert, ob die Subkultur des „leghismo“ Demokratie und Nationalstaat gefährdet und welchen alternativen Weg die Leghisten im Prozeß der europäischen Integration weisen.
