Die Ökologische Ökonomie geht über den auf volkswirtschaftlichen Modellen beruhenden Ansatz der Umweltökonomie hinaus, denn im Unterschied zu diesem disziplinverhafteten Teilgebiet der Wirtschaftswissenschaft bezieht sie ethische und naturwissenschaftliche Aspekte ein und steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem politischen Konzept der nachhaltigen Entwicklung.

Günther Seeber strukturiert die Ökologische Ökonomie und reduziert sie auf ihre Kategorien. In seiner Einführung in ihre Grundlagen legt er besonderen Wert auf die Einbettung der problemrelevanten wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Kategorien der ökonomischen Verhaltenstheorie, des Kosten-Nutzen-Denkens, der Sozialökonomie etc. in außerfachliche Restriktionen.
