The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Mayo Clinic has been active for more than 50 years. During that time, the staff has been involved in innovation and research in the diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is equipped with the latest technology and offers a full spectrum of services. Mayo Clinic was among the first medical centers to pioneer diagnostic techniques via cardiac catheterization. Mayo Clinic has also pioneered the use of several catheter-based therapies, including: Complex coronary artery revascularization Invasive physiologic and hemodynamic assessments Repair of congenital heart defects in children and adults Minimally invasive structural heart disease interventions, including percutaneous valve replacement, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and percutaneous mitral valve repair The staff in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory collaborates with other specialty areas and offers treatment for several conditions, such as carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease. At Mayo Clinic's campus in Minnesota, the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory services are integrated into a clinical setting through the Coronary Artery Disease Clinic. In the Coronary Artery Disease Clinic, you'll consult with doctors on the latest advances relevant to your condition, and you're then treated in the lab soon after. The Valvular Heart Disease Clinic, Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, Heart Failure Clinic and other subspecialty cardiovascular clinics partner with the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory to optimize your care. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory offers treatment for children, including infants, at Mayo Clinic's campus in Minnesota. Staff includes specialists trained in treating children with heart conditions (pediatric cardiologists). Treatment for adults is offered at the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. After treatment, you'll have the option of continuing your care with a Mayo Clinic doctor, or you may return to your own doctor. Cardiologists and staff have access to innovative technology that can extend treatment capabilities and reduce risks. The lab's stereotaxis computerized magnetic guidance system allows your doctor to use magnets to more precisely manipulate wires and catheters in your heart, which increases your doctor's ability to access and treat more complex or chronic coronary blockages without surgery. It also allows procedures to be completed in less time, reducing your exposure to radiation. Technology including intracardiac and intravascular imaging, 3D echocardiogram, and rotational angiography is used to further improve the safety and success rates for complex procedures. Many procedures are now conducted through catheters inserted in arteries in the arm, which helps to improve your safety and comfort. Doctors may use support systems such as an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), left ventricular assist device (LVAD) or a method called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to support your circulation when your procedure is very complex or your left ventricular function is very poor.

Procedures conducted in the catheterization laboratory to diagnose your condition may include: Constriction and restriction studies Coronary, carotid, renal, peripheral and other forms of angiography Coronary physiology, endothelial and microcirculation assessment (coronary spasm study) Endomyocardial biopsy Evaluation of complex valvular disease Full range of services for people who are having organ transplants, including surveillance biopsies and ultrasound Intracardiac and intravascular ultrasound Left and right heart hemodynamic assessment Procedures conducted in the catheterization laboratory to treat or manage your condition may include: Angioplasty and stenting for peripheral artery disease (PAD) affecting the legs or kidneys Balloon atrial septostomy as part of pulmonary atresia treatment Balloon dilatation and stent placement to treat coarctation of the aorta Balloon valvuloplasty and transcatheter aortic valve replacement to treat aortic valve stenosis and balloon valvuloplasty to treat mitral valve stenosis Carotid angioplasty and stenting Closure of periprosthetic valve leaks Clot removal with aspiration device (thrombectomy) Coronary angioplasty and stents to treat coronary artery disease Enhanced external counterpulsation treatment for some people with chest pain (angina) Nonsurgical closure of ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) or patent foramen ovale Percutaneous mitral valve repair, a minimally invasive procedure to treat mitral valve disease Plaque removal with a rotating device (atherectomy) Pulmonary artery angioplasty to open lung arteries blocked with chronic clots and help improve pulmonary hypertension Pulmonary vein stenting to treat veins blocked after an ablation procedure Septal ablation to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Stereotaxis magnetically assisted intervention for complex cases Transcatheter insertion of coil or occluder to treat patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) Ventricular assist devices (VADs) Not all procedures may be available at all locations. Mayo Clinic's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Florida doesn't offer carotid angioplasty and stenting, or procedures to treat some congenital heart conditions.

Research

Mayo Clinic's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory has a dynamic research program. Several members of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory are involved in research and development of new technologies and techniques to expand and improve cardiac catheterization treatment.
