In the Sports Cardiology Clinic at Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, a team of doctors trained in heart disease (cardiologists), exercise physiologists and other specialists evaluate and treat heart (cardiovascular) conditions with the goal of keeping athletes active in sports. In addition to having training in heart disease (cardiology), doctors in sports cardiology require special expertise and understanding of the physical demands of competitive sports and the psychology of athletes. Mayo sports cardiologists have training in cardiology and exercise physiology. Sports cardiologists at Mayo also have extensive experience treating athletes with cardiovascular conditions. They also have experience with athletic participation and understand the importance of sports participation to athletes. Our doctors aim to offer treatments that will allow you to continue to play sports when possible, and doctors will also advise you on how to improve training and performance. In your evaluation, doctors focus on identifying potentially serious cardiovascular conditions that, if left untreated, could harm you. The sports cardiology team has access to doctors trained in all of the medical specialties (disciplines) at Mayo Clinic, including doctors trained in several subspecialties within the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases. This helps the team to correctly diagnose your condition and recommend the proper treatment. Doctors in the Sports Cardiology Clinic can also arrange referrals to other areas within Mayo Clinic as needed. The multidisciplinary team at Mayo Clinic provides an integrated approach to your treatment that isn't available to clinics that offer only cardiology or sports medicine treatment. In the Sports Cardiology Clinic, cardiologists work closely with specialists trained in sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, nutrition, neurology, and other areas to provide you with coordinated care.

Services

In the Sports Cardiology Clinic, a sports cardiologist and exercise physiologist evaluates you and suggests the most appropriate treatments that may allow you to stay active in sports. Doctors work with you to efficiently diagnose and treat your symptoms. Your evaluation and treatment are tailored to your individual needs and may include: A thorough review of your medical history A review of your athletic history An evaluation of your symptoms A cardiovascular physical examination An electrocardiogram Cardiopulmonary exercise tests or other diagnostic cardiac tests, when indicated Laboratory testing A sports nutrition consultation A sports medicine evaluation and consultation Physical therapy Training advice to stay active in sports and improve your athletic performance Referrals to other specialists, if a cardiologist can't resolve your health issue Not all services may be available at all locations. Please confirm when you call for an appointment. The Sports Cardiology Clinic is open to adult athletes who are involved at any level of sports, from recreational to high-level competition sports. Adolescent athletes, age 15 and older, also may be evaluated in the Sports Cardiology Clinic. You may come to the Sports Cardiology Clinic for many reasons, including: Clearance to continue sports participation after you have been diagnosed with a cardiovascular condition or have had cardiovascular surgery or a cardiac event Evaluation of symptoms you are experiencing, such as chest pain, palpitations or shortness of breath that occurs during training or competition Evaluation of an unexplained deterioration in your athletic performance Discussion of concerns about your family history of cardiovascular disease Evaluation of impaired athletic performance due to previous medical treatment Advice on controlling your cardiovascular risk factors Desire for a comprehensive cardiovascular screening
