Fire off the Hunger Games cannon, we’ve lost another one. This week’s episode of The Walking Dead — and spoilers past this point — ended with another big character death, killing off Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) thanks to an arrow through the throat delivered by Carol (Melissa McBride). “When she shoots him, whatever the few seconds he has to register that is, it’s just such a shock,” Hamilton told Decider. “There’s almost that kind of relief, that he doesn’t have to go out into the world alone, too. I don’t think he would have chosen that, obviously. But in the moment that he’s lying there looking up at the stars, I imagine that actually it was a little bit of a relief to get off the rat race of always having to be scheming and conniving.” In the episode, the former Commonwealth master manipulator has been sprung from prison by Carol and Daryl (Norman Reedus), who are on the hunt for their missing friends. But episode’s end, they’ve discovered that the Commonwealth has a working train, and are going to use that to track their compatriots down. So, who needs Lance? Not the two of them. And though they give him a shot to escape into the woods, he grabs a gun, turns around to kill them, and ends up lying dead in the dirt. To find out more about Lance’s final hour, read on. Decider: RIP Lance! A lot of fans thought Lance went out last episode via Sebastian zombie. So I was kind of surprised he didn’t make it out of this one as well. He’s a bit of a cockroach. Josh Hamilton: Yes. Very much so. I was a little surprised too. I thought, “Come on, you could have kept me going a little bit longer.” But, I guess they have a few other story threads they need to give time to. He does get a really big ending here… He dies looking up at the stars, an arrow through the neck. What did you take away from that moment, emotionally in terms of ending the arc for Lance that way? I mean, it’s so sudden, when he makes the decision, it’s sort of a split second decision to grab the gun. It’s sort of his last little cockroach moment of like, “How do I gain control?” The fact of being sent away by Carol, who he felt like he had a connection with and an understanding, I think is very, just very hurtful to him. He lashes out in that split second. And then, when she shoots him, whatever the few seconds he has to register that is, it’s just such a shock. There’s almost that kind of relief, that he doesn’t have to go out into the world alone, too. I don’t think he would have chosen that, obviously. But in the moment that he’s lying there looking up at the stars, I imagine that actually it was a little bit of a relief to get off the rat race of always having to be scheming and conniving. Lance goes through so much, not just in the season, but even this episode. And he keeps insisting over and over that he has been through enough life changing experiences to be a better man. Do you think this is true? And alternately, does he think this is true? I think it was an incredibly traumatic experience having to cut up his friend and feed him to Sebastian. I do feel like he believes he was changed by that. He might believe that he is a better person, but I think also that his MO is always trying to come out on top of any situation and figure out his crack in the wall to get through. His powers of self delusion are… I think maybe he does believe it. If he had survived, could he have actually legitimately changed? Or would Lance have always been Lance? I mean, it’s hard to change, [though] if he had to figure out how to survive in the wilderness, he would have. I think some of his Lance-like tendencies might have served him, so I don’t know that he would have been… But then again people show great capacity for change, too. Negan seems to have gone through a lot of changes. And if he can do it, anyone can… Or has he? Who knows. He is getting a spin-off. So, I feel like there’s been at least some change. Yeah, I think it depends what would have happened? It’s hard to imagine him going off on his own. So, I don’t know what he would have done. I guess now we’ll never know. I guess not. What was it like playing that final scene with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride? Obviously, it’s a different thing as an actor but in the scene, Carol and Daryl are giving Lance nothing at all. So, what was it like playing off that? Well, it helped me that they were giving me nothing, because it just makes him more desperate and having to talk them into a reason to keep him around. So, it gave me more to overcome. It’s always useful as an actor to have a good, strong thing to have to overcome. Daryl, I think he expects, that was not a surprise. I do think it’s Carol who he feels a betrayal from. I think he had convinced himself that he and Carol understood each other, and that they would really make a good team, if she would have let him work with them. That feels like almost a fatal flaw of Lance in a certain way, that he keeps thinking he understands people and they understand him. And ultimately, maybe he doesn’t? Or, not as well as he thinks he does. That’s a really good point. Yeah, I think he does. He prides himself on thinking that he knows what to say, and who to say it to, and how to be with different people. But like I said, there is a lot of self delusion involved, too. Someone who has spent their whole life trying to achieve some warped sense of the American dream and rise up and try to reach the upper class that was so close, and yet so far away in his youth. I think we’ve talked about this before, and it’s not really in the show. But Angela [Kang] and I had talked about that his father, Lance’s father, had maybe been the chauffeur for the Miltons. And so he’d grown up close to but, just sort of tantalizingly far away [from] that world. And he’s done everything he can to succeed in that world, which is, you could also look at it as a comment on the contortions that modern day late stage capitalism makes people go through in order to succeed at the expense of everyone around them. Jumping back to the beginning of the episode, what was it like playing that scene with Teo Rapp-Olsson slithering on the floor in a pile of blood? That was one of those scenes, there’s very little acting required because the effects guys did such a beautifully gruesome job with Calhoun’s body and with Sebastian. To be stuck in that room for a whole day covered in blood and guts, it was the opposite of having to act with a blue screen. It was all right there. It was very easy to feel traumatized by that. This episode really drove home, the stuff that Lance says about Pamela and the way he talks about Pamela, it almost feels like he thinks of her as a surrogate mother. And perhaps there’s a bit of sibling rivalry between him and Sebastian. Am I looking too much into it? No, I think that’s all in there. It’s even more twisted in that, it’s somewhat parental. But also, I do think Lance has always thought that Pamela, that she was the unattainable princess in the tower. He’s always, you know, wanted her approval. And he had a bit of a crush on her, from an early age. And so yeah, I think that’s all in there, and it’s a pretty convoluted, complicated mess of emotions going on. I don’t think even Lance understands it, but I do think there’s a sexual charge there. There’s a parental thing, there’s a sibling rivalry with Sebastian – that’s all in there. I don’t think you’re reaching too much at all. Moving over to the cave scene, it’s left a little ambiguous whether Lance was actually taking Carol there to die, or if he actually does lose control of the light. Yeah, it was a little fishy. It was a little convenient the way the light disappears, and he’s like, “Oh, wait, here I am. Do you need any help?” I don’t think it was a mistake. I do think that there might have been, he’s working every angle all the time… He likes to give himself a little wiggle room either way. Overall, what has been your takeaway from your time on the show now that it’s over? I mean, the whole experience, I have to say. The high points for me were just getting to work with that cast and the crew. It’s such a top notch cast and crew. I know that people talk about that a lot, but the shooting circumstances are often pretty grueling. Whether it’s in the heat in the middle of the day, or at night in the woods, there’s just no room for any diva-ish behavior or any sort… People can get grumpy, but it’s one of those shows where if anyone’s not really supportive and on board, they get weeded out. I’ve been on shows, or I’ve guested on shows that were only been on for two or three years. And the mood or the general tone of enthusiasm was much lower than the 11th season of the show where everyone really is still maintaining this level of support and enthusiasm about trying to get it right. That, and also, I’d never had an experience with the fandom of a show like this. And that’s been an amazing experience. I’ve been doing this a long time, and I’ve never felt that kind of enthusiasm from a fanbase that large and that dedicated, which was just a really great thing to experience. And, would you be up for popping up again on like a Lance origin style episode of Tales of The Walking Dead or something? Absolutely, yeah. I mean, personally, I’d love to see a sitcom called Hornsby set back in the day, setting up the Commonwealth. He’s trying to manage the Commonwealth and figure out his life — and maybe finding love? [Laughs] Yes! Tonight, on a very special Hornsby. This interview has been edited for clarity and length. The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC, and streams a week early on AMC+.
