Edward Hopper is the artist behind the 1942 diner-inspired painting, Nighthawks, and at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s new exhibit, Edward Hopper’s New York, experience the city through the painter’s eyes. Hopper, who lived in the Big Apple for nearly six decades, was famed for his intimate snapshots of urban life, like a glimpse of a woman inside an apartment, or a movie usher left to her private thoughts. This survey is especially compelling for its breadth: Early works of Hopper’s, like his sketches are featured, as well as his later-in-life paintings, which capture the bustle and the sometimes-lonely life of a city.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, isn’t until Monday, but we see no reason you can’t make it a multi-day affair when the restaurant specials are this tasty. First up: Buzzy Sona in Flatiron has whipped up a special cocktail (the Jamun Tonic with gin, grapefruit juice, and blueberries), and veggie and meat tasting boards for the holiday. Junoon has added a few specials to the menu for the weekend, including Slow Braised Lamb Shanks with yogurt and black cardamom. Sunday, Baar Baar will be hosting a one-off Diwali dinner, complete with a three-course menu and live Bollywood music. And for sweet tooths, make sure to pick up mithai for the holiday, including Carrot Halwa, and Cranberry Date Energy Balls at Bombay Sandwich Co.

Harlem
While we’re all for these crisp fall climes and apple picking, this season does mean bidding adieu to some of the city’s most popular outdoor markets. This Friday, make sure to swing by Harlem Bazaar for their all-day season finale event. The arts and culture market is the largest in uptown Manhattan and the Bronx, and features a variety of artists, creators, and merchants selling everything from food to clothing. Bonus: Kids Breaking League and Groove With Me will also be there to teach everyone street dance moves.

Brooklyn Navy Yard
Did you know the world’s first rooftop vineyard, Rooftop Reds, is located at the Brooklyn Navy Yard? If you’ve never explored it, this weekend would be an excellent time to stop by: The vineyard is hosting a grape stomping party, followed by a Pét-Nat and temaki lunch catered by Smorgasburg’s Kinoko. The best part? Your ticket includes an invite to a party in May of ‘23, when you can pick up the wine you helped to create.

We’d like to make a couple things clear about Halloween: One, you are never too old to ask for candy. Two, you’re allowed to celebrate during the entire month of October. So this Saturday, head to the Meatpacking District, where the neighborhood’s annual Treat in the Streets will have everything from a drag queen story hour to an Artist and Fleas outdoor market, plus the ever-popular Doggie Costume Contest (the winner gets a free overnight at the dog-friendly Gansevoort Meatpacking hotel).

As you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And while wearing pink is a nice way to show your support, you can also contribute to the cause through timely specials at local eateries. Caribbean spot Kokomo will be donating 15% of their proceeds this month to breast cancer research; they also have a delicious pink cocktail on the menu, the Blouse & Skirt made with agave and watermelon. Famed hotel The Algonquin has turned their Blue Bar literally pink this month, and will also have a happy hour with two special cocktails, The Pink Ribbon and Bouncing Betty, with proceeds benefiting Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. And over at the new Hard Rock Hotel New York, all the restaurants and bars will be serving a speciality Pump Up The Jam pink cocktail, with proceeds going to American Cancer Society.

As we have reminded you, Election Day is drawing near. And since we know you’ll be voting, why not encourage others to do the same? Join North Six and Vote Forward this Saturday at Urban Zen for a letter writing event. They’ll provide all the materials (stamps, addresses, paper, and envelopes), and you’ll write letters of voting encouragement to underrepresented voters. The goal is to complete 10,000 letters in advance of the election. Help make it happen.

Flatiron
Real talk: Pilates is harder than any mega-weights class we’ve ever done. But the benefits —strong core, bragging rights—are worth it. And one of our favorite studios just opened a brand-new facility in Flatiron: At 6,000 square-feet, it’s actually New York City’s largest studio. There are 35 reformer machines, multiple classrooms, and a class named Abs, Arms, and Ass. What more do you need?
