(Image credit: Shutterstock) So, what is today's Wordle answer for game #493? Drumroll please - it's FOGGY. Hi there, I'm Henry T. Casey, a senior editor at Tom's Guide who is taking up the Wordle cause on weekdays while Kelly is out on a well-deserved vacation. As for my bonafides for this column, I've got a 100% win percentage, though I have lost one round - I just played enough so it would round up from 99.9% to 100%. Today's Wordle is a bit of a tricky one, with but WordleBot says the average is only 4.4 steps. So, much like during math class in my later high school years, I'm doing a bit worse than most. I'm a weird one because I rarely go with the same starter, though today I ran with 'CANOE' one of the words listed in our best Wordle start words - but for those who are trying to eliminate vowels. It has three of the five most popular characters in Wordle (E, A and O) and it's proven strong in the past. Today, however, my canoe only got me one yellow and no greens. WordleBot sayid that while 'CANOE' is a strong opening guess, it was "unlucky." I agree. 340 possible solutions remained. (Image credit: Wordle) History repeated itself when I pulled another good (by WordleBot's mind) choice with 'WORTH,' which got a Skill score of 87. This guess turned my yellow 'O' into a green 'O,' but gave me nothing else. Again, WordleBot said this choice was also "unlucky." Struggling, I looked at the board of available letters. I don't like guessing words that end in 'Y' but I had to, so I went with 'MOUSY.' S is in the top 10 most-used Wordle characters, you know. All I got was that green 'Y' I was hoping for. WordleBot said 70 skill points and "good guess," then suggesting that 'GODLY' would have been more efficient. It would know, since it's the god of this game. At this point, I thought "is this going to be a double-letter situation?" and settled on 'O' as that potential double-up letter. WordleBot thought my round 4 guess of 'POOFY; was also poor - and gave me a 0 for that. At least Wordle gave me a yellow 'F' for my trouble. That was all I needed, as everything became clear. An 'F,' an 'O,' and a 'Y?' Had to be - and was - 'FOGGY.' I'll be back tomorrow to (hopefully) continue the Tom's Guide Wordle streak. Hope your record is also still standing, Wordlers. Did you have to clear a path through foggy thought to find today's Wordle? Let me know how you fared today in an email (opens in new tab). I may not be able to get back to everybody, but I'll try! Reading this in a later time zone? The Wordle answer for game #492 was FAULT. Back to normality with today's Wordle, which WordleBot reckons will take the average player 4.0 goes to get. Well, call me Mr Average (you wouldn't be the first), because I completed today's Wordle in exactly four moves. As per usual, my pick of the best Wordle start words was AUDIT. Yes, it has one fewer vowel than AUDIO, but very few English words actually end in 'O', while 'T' is the fifth most frequently used letter in the Wordle alphabet. Today, it proved a great starting point, granting me two yellows and a green leaving me with, at most, two more letters to find. WordleBot confirms the obvious that, yes, this was a terrific start. With three letters confirmed, it left only 12 possible words remaining, though better options were available. LEAST (8), SLANT (5) and STALE (also 5) would all have proved better, but things were certainly looking positive all the same. My next guess - something to combine the final letter of 'T' with an 'A' and 'U' in the six possible remaining locations - took me a while. In fact, it took me so long that I had to temporarily abandon today's Wordle in order to make an appointment. But when I finally came up with GAMUT it was another good'un, putting that pesky 'A' in its right place and ruling out two more letters. I'd halved the possible answers remaining to six (though WordleBot tells me that LAUGH would have been better, leaving just two.) (Image credit: Alan Martin) Knowing that the 'U' had to sit in position #1 or #3, and unable to think of any possibilities for the former (on account of there being none, WordleBot confirms), I opted for JAUNT. Unsurprisingly, the 'U' turned green leaving only two possible answers remaining. I opted for FAULT, completing the puzzle in four moves. The other option, if you're curious would have left me with four green letters: VAULT. Kelly Woo will be back tomorrow to (hopefully) continue the Tom's Guide Wordle streak. Hope your record is also still standing, Wordlers. Previous Wordle answers

The best tip I can give is to use one of the best Wordle start words. I can't stress this enough - it makes a massive difference. Without one, you'll be scrabbling around in the dark trying (and possibly failing) to find the right five letters (or possibly fewer) out of the 26 possibles. But clever people (not me) have done the math and identified the best start words based on both frequency in English and frequency among Wordle answers. So use them! Secondly, think about combinations, especially at the start and end. Some options are far more common than others - for instance, SH, ST, CR and CH all feature frequently. Vowels obviously need consideration too: not all Wordle answers will contain more than one, but plenty do, and some even have three. A good Wordle start word should have used a couple, but if they don't feature you might well want to try another one or two on your next go. Plus, remember the Y - this sometimes acts as a surrogate vowel, and is easy to forget. It also appears at the end of plenty of words. Finally, try out possibilities. So long as you don't press 'Enter' you can try possible answers to see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters plus any you know are definitely in the word, then mentally change one to the other available options. This technique has worked for me multiple times, and it's particularly helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET). What else should I know about Wordle
Wordle officially launched in October 2021, but actually started in June of that year and celebrated its first birthday on June 19, 2022. (You can read my thoughts on the 5 things Wordle needs to improve if it's to keep us playing for its second year.) However, it only grew in popularity towards the end of the year, then went viral in January as the world woke up to its charms. In fact, it proved so successful that The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-figure sum in early February and the game is now part of NYT Games. It's played via the NYT Games website here (opens in new tab), and is entirely free. Both the NYT and the game's creator, Josh Wardle, have stated that it will remain free. Some people think that Wordle has got harder since the NYT takeover, but it really hasn't. Wordle is a simple game in which your challenge is to guess a five-letter word in six attempts. Each time you guess, you're told which of your chosen letters are in the target word, and whether they are in the right place. If a letter is in the correct place, it turns green. If it's in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the word at all, it turns gray. There's just one puzzle a day, and everyone completes the same one. It resets at midnight each day. You'll find more information about the game in our What is Wordle? article. Wordle Alternatives

Reply John II I used to use SUITE which uses 3 common vowels and 2 common consonants. Lately, it seems like some of the words have been a bit more obscure, so I've switched to HAVER (thanks goes out to The Proclaimers and 500 Miles for this obscure word). If no hits, that's fine, I burn some more letters to narrow the field by using two more vowels and other common consonants... MOIST. Yeah, I know... no one likes MOIST, but it reveals two more vowels and three more consonants . That combo helped me get today's HAIRY on the third guess! 🆒 Reply Nhobuna The may 10th answer might also be a double. I was working through it but I have a b,u, and t as letters that are in the actual word. Reply TexTechie There are 2 answers again evidently.. I have the same word as you and it's not gecko obviously 😅 Reply Scotth71 Far from Gecko for me. Not sure what is going on but seems someone has mucked up. Reply SS2021user Was in the exakt same position with the end of 335, but chose wrong. Didn't think GAMER would be a very likely word, so I chose GAZER instead. Goodbye 40 day streak! Reply Jarmeister Ugh. Today's (#344) was near impossible for a non native English speaker. Word I've only heard in couple of songs and would probably not use naturally in conversation. Reply JES2000 I'm surprised to see the misspelled "alright" in a wordle story. Reply SS2021user I got Wordle 348 in 3 guesses as well, but I got... slightly luckier with my second guess. After guessing STARE I guessed PHONY, leaving me with 1 possible solution, and 4 green letters. Reply R_macus Streak ended with #357. Stare, House, poise, loose, moose, noose.
