There' s BIG News About The New Chevrolet Silverado EV

Dec. 17, 2021 4:37 AM ET by Karl Furlong Industry News / 1 Comment Chevy announces when reservations will open. The battle for America's best truck will continue into the electrified era. Leading the charge will be the Ford F-150 Lightning, a vehicle that is attracting many first-time Ford customers. But Chevrolet will be keen to make up for lost time with its own challenger. While reservations for the F-150 Lightning have already closed, Chevrolet has just revealed when reservations will open for the Silverado EV. Chevy's electric truck will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 5, 2022, at 12 pm ET/9 am PT. An hour after the live reveal, reservations for the much-anticipated truck will open. The F-150 Lightning already racked up over 100,000 pre-orders, so can Chevy match it? Chevrolet CarBuzz generalmotorsdesign/Instagram The Silverado EV has a lot going for it. Riding on the Ultium Platform shared with the GMC Hummer EV, the Silverado EV has the potential to match the Hummer's maximum output of 1,000 horsepower and an astonishing 11,500 lb-ft of torque. A 400-mile range on certain models should also be possible. The Silverado EV will also come with an available four-wheel steer option to improve agility and reduce the turning circle at lower speeds. This will have major benefits when maneuvering the truck while towing. Customers will also be able to equip a fixed glass roof that increases headroom, the first of its kind for any GM pickup. Not much more is known about the Silverado EV but it will be built at the company's plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, the same site where the Hummer will be built. Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet While the Hummer has a high price tag and a luxurious cabin, we expect the Silverado to be a little more practical and with fewer luxuries. The base F-150 Lightning begins at just under $40,000, so that's the starting point GM will likely be targeting with the Silverado EV. Of course, higher-spec models will cost significantly more, and there should be loads of accessories to choose from. As we've seen with the Rivian R1T, the unique structure of an electric pickup enables innovative accessories and storage solutions. With just weeks to go before it's revealed, we'll know soon if Chevy has a real F-150 Lightning challenger on its hands. The Silverado EV is only expected to begin production early in 2023.
