Mercedes Puts G-Class In Giant Red Pill For New Matrix Movie
Dec. 20, 2021 11:07 AM ET by Gerhard Horn Movies & TV / 5 Comments Apparently, the G-Class and the red pill are the perfect match. We recently reported on Hyundai's Ioniq 5 featuring in the brand-new Spider-Man movie, even though we could not remember seeing it in there. We've since watched it again and can confirm that it is indeed part of the movie, but not in a cringey and product placement kind of way. The next big movie this year is The Matrix Resurrections, and it too has a hero car. It makes sense, as the previous Matrix movies had some amazing car scenes. The Wachowskis spent $2.5 million building a piece of a freeway on a decommissioned naval base for The Matrix Reloaded. Back then, the Wachowskis did a deal with Cadillac, who provided all the cars smashed up in that now-famous sequence. Now it's the Mercedes G-Class' turn to enter the Matrix. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz This time, Mercedes-Benz provided a few G550s. And it seems like this expensive SUV will be less well-integrated, as it plays a pivotal role in the movie. But hey, if you're going to create a path for Neo and Trinity to escape, what better way to do it than with a G-Class? Careful not to spoil the plot, Mercedes mentions that rebels drive the G550, and we assume they're the good guys. Mercedes also celebrated the premiere of The Matrix Resurrections by placing a G550 in a giant red pill outside the venue. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz For those who don't get the reference, Neo (Keanu Reeves) is given a choice in the first Matrix movie: red or blue. The blue pill takes one back to everyday mundane life, while the red pill leads to a fight with the machines using humans as cheap battery packs. We can see why EV makers decided not to use this opportunity for product placement… "The G-Class and the red pill go very well together. Both stand for freedom, individuality, and self-determination. That's why we are delighted to support Warner Bros. Pictures with the worldwide cinema release of 'The Matrix Resurrections' with an extraordinary and attention-grabbing installation," said Dr. Emmerich Schiller, CEO Managing Director Mercedes-Benz G GmbH and Head of the Off-Road Vehicle Product Division at Mercedes-Benz AG.
