Toyota GR Corolla Flashes Manual Transmission

Dec. 30, 2021 7:19 AM ET by Jared Rosenholtz Teaser / 7 Comments Blink and you'll miss it. We were bitterly disappointed when Toyota decided not to offer its popular Gazoo Racing Yaris here in the United States. But the Japanese automaker will soon make up for that major letdown, developing a GR Corolla for the North American market. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla should use the same 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder found in its Yaris counterpart, tuned to produce around 300 horsepower, likely going out to an all-wheel-drive system. Toyota had subtly teased the GR Corolla in the background of Instagram posts advertising the standard Corolla Hatchback. All official previews of the car have been fleeting at best, but this latest example takes the word "teaser" to a new level. https://www.instagram.com/p/CYCXMP8Bop7/ Toyota USA/Instagram Toyota USA / Instagram Toyota USA / Instagram Toyota USA posted a short video on its Instagram account showing the GR86 driving up a winding road. The video was posted with the caption "you have to be quick to catch it," not referencing the 228-hp sports car. That caption actually refers to a brief (as in blink and you'll miss it) moment in the video that flashes a glimpse at the upcoming GR Corolla. If you pause the video at exactly the right moment, you can see the Corolla's front end wearing the same camouflage wrap seen in previous teasers. If you pause it again right after the Corolla pops on screen, you'll spot someone pushing the clutch in on a manual transmission. This could potentially be the manual from the 86, but we believe this could be a hint that the GR Corolla will come with a stick shift. Toyota/Instagram Toyota USA/Instagram Oddly, the version of the video currently live on the Toyota USA Instagram page only shows an obscured look at the GR Corolla's front end. An earlier copy of the video (screenshots posted at the top of this article) had the car fully in-frame, giving us our best look yet at the anticipated hot hatchback. With more official teasers coming, it may not be much longer until Toyota officially reveals the GR Corolla. CarBuzz CarBuzz
